Soulful Saxophone with southern roots. Jazz, soul/r&b, hip hop, and gospel influenced.
Bio / Background
A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Michael grew up listening to his mother sing with the Mississippi Mass Choir and accompanying her at church on Sunday mornings. His father was also a tenor saxophonist, and really influenced Michael's appreciation of 1960's and 70's soul music. At the same time, young Burton was building his own collection of hip hop and jazz recordings. These influences have had a profound effect on his approach to improvisation and composition. Michael received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in jazz studies, from the prestigious Indiana University School of Music, where he studied with the world famous jazz educator David Baker. After college, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of the band Urban Soul, which also includes Ant Perry (keys), Tres Gilbert (bass), Kimmeron "K.B." Blalark (drums), and Justin Gilbert (keys). Their CD will be out soon.
