Melodic space rock with pop sensibilities and an indie post-punk edge.
Bio / Background
Matilda Catches Fire formed in the summer of 2003 when Davy Vonschlegell returned from Colorado to tell longtime friend, Ed Thanhouser, that he wanted to, “get serious about this music stuff.†Ed and Davy culled longtime friends and musicians Seth Norman and Bryon Rudd to complete the band’s lineup. Matilda Catches Fire, as they would come to be known, immediately played several shows with neither set-lists nor finished songs. Sprawling jams and tight pop hooks intersected in these spontaneous explosions of a vision that had slowly begun to take shape. Basement demos were recorded and plans were made to enter a studio. That fall, less than 4 months after the band’s formation, friends Gabriel Espinosa and Chris Anderson of Animal Kingdom recordings invited MCF to record their first record in the garage-cum-studio of the Espinosa family.
↓ more ↓Kept at a tight 5 songs, this EP culled and sharpened the many styles, influences and songwriting sensibilities extant in such diverse membership. An entirely collaborative effort by all parties, the self-titled Debut EP has defied easy categorization, yet received unanimous critical praise from local music press, the infamous CD Baby staff, Tower Records magazine, and received airtime on Alternative and College stations across the U.S. It was recorded, produced, financed, mixed and distributed by the band and their friends; it is a testament to Portland D.I.Y. culture and the kind of artistic dedication found only in hungry young bands like Matilda Catches Fire.
“Very smart, original songwriting, its one of the best things I've heard in years."
