Some of the mystery of the wolf is its ability to go undetected. Staying as far away from man as possible, they live their lives and only when man intervenes, do the problems occur.

Pup to Pathfinder: As night falls, most howling is done to assemble the pack. The wolf pups playfully fight and howl, learning their adult skills. Even at this age, they establish a social rank. As the pup comes of age he will become a master tracker and hunter, giving him the nickname, "Pathfinder."

Forced Trails: (inspired by a wonderful poster I saw in Cherokee, N.C., artist unknown but "Thank you--beautiful!") Wolves and the animal kingdom in general, have the ability to remember what their ancestors have learned, so they need not waste time learning things already learned. They know and accept things. Fire is hot! They do not have to get burned to know this. Some people call this instinct. It amazes me how some humans understand and accept the world with its checks and balances. Yet others not only don't understand, but fight it, and don't even realize they don't understand. We have a lot to learn about our instinct and our place in this world.

The Hunt: Intelligent, able to adapt with nature, keen sense of smell, excellent sight, superb hearing, and powerful bodies, the wolf is a great hunter, with endurance and speeds up to 40mph. A successful hunt is likely tonight! The herd or species that is hunted is strengthened by the wolf, which takes the weak, sick, or crippled.

Our Land Also: Man has the ability to reason, a skill that we have not yet fully developed. Put yourself in the footprints of any other species as a whole. Now reason it through. Typically, what man doesn't understand, he destroys.

Just a Wolf: 80% of my research shows the wolf to be evil, from biblical stories to stories passed down through generations, even nursery rhymes, yet, not one attack on a man by a wolf unprovoked has ever been recorded. In fact, the wolf wants nothing to do with man. As man moves in, the wolf goes deeper into the forest . . . until there is no more room.

How, then, does an animal like the wolf rise up to such levels as to be worshipped and sink to such lows as to be nearly wiped out?

Research and understanding are great things. But the first thing we need to learn is acceptance. Total and unconditional acceptance.

Alpha to Omega: As the Alpha wolf eventually dies, the life cycle continues. A new wolf moves in to take his place, but will always remember the Alpha's past.
