With great guitars, horns and percussions, and the ever-present endearing voice of Samba Mapangala, this album is sure to get you moving.
Editorial review
At the end of Virunga's sold-out European tour (ca. 1991), the band went into a London studio to document their sound. The band now carries a hard-hitting horn section, but their sound remains true to their African roots. ~ J. Poet, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
More than three decades into his storied career, Samba Mapangala’s soaring voice and uplifting melodies still bring joy to fans the world over. Those hearing Samba’s music for the first time frequently join the ranks of the enthusiasts whose collections are well stocked with Orchestra Virunga albums.
Samba began singing professionally in Kinshasa, in the early 1970’s. In 1975, he moved with other musicians to Kampala, where they formed the group Les Kinois. From 1977 to 1997, he was based in Nairobi, first with Les Kinois, then with his Orchestra Virunga, which he founded in 1981.
FEET ON FIRE, recorded on the heels of Virunga’s 1991 European tour, captures the group at its best. Featurning a rich, live sound, this album has become legendary for hits like Vidonge—always a dance floor-filler among East African audiences—and Sungura, an adpation of the tortoise and the hare fable.
