Bio / Background
Kate Isenberg is a San Francisco–based, folk-pop singer-songwriter whose acoustic guitar and lyrics provide a crystal-clear window on life. In March 2007, Kate released her third full-length album, THE TIME COMES ON HUMMING TRACKS. Within days of its release, Acoustic Guitar magazine named the release an editor's choice. Audiences are crowding into top San Francisco venues like Cafe Du Nord and El Rio to hear the extraordinary tunefulness and sparkling musicianship of Kate's new acoustic band.
As the vibration of rails signals an oncoming train, the buzz growing around THE TIME COMES ON HUMMING TRACKS announces a powerful arrival. Kate's unique guitar riffs set the stage for her lyrics, which have the intimacy of secrets told to a friend, but the universal scope of good fiction. Not just a girl with a guitar, Kate is a true multi-instrumentalist and producer.
↓ more ↓After arranging and recording all the songs for THE TIME COMES ON HUMMING TRACKS in her San Francisco home, Kate chose Jon Evans (bassist, Tori Amos; engineer, Bill Frisell, Scott Amendola) to mix the record at the Berkeley studio San Pablo Recorders. The resulting collection combines the fresh edge of indie acoustic songwriting with the top-of-the-line audio quality of a radio-ready breakout album. Listeners report continually discovering new aspects of the disc, from the subtle lyrics to the original album art (painted by Kate herself) to the layers of harmony, drums, bass, piano, violin, mandolin, banjo, and slide flute. Chronicling the pitfalls and transcendence of city life and love, the record moves smoothly from loss to laughter like a streetcar gliding through the hilly neighborhoods of San Francisco. In live shows, the record's variety is brought to life by a super-tight four-piece band, featuring Kate on guitar and vocals, Aaron Brinkerhoff on drums, Fergus D. Lenehan on bass, and Cara Wick on violin. The band's sense of humor matches its musicianship, making for a set that's as fun as it is professional.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Kate began studying classical violin at age eight. In her teens, she turned her ears to the highly crafted, lyrically smart, melodic pop compositions of Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, the Police, and the Indigo Girls. In college at Harvard, while a passionate student of English and American literature, she taught herself guitar and began writing fiction and journalism. Words and music came together after college, when Kate toured top listening rooms on the East and West Coasts as part of the critically acclaimed, crowd-favorite folk-rock duo Vice Versa. Kate's first solo release, the guitar-intensive CADUCOUS (2002), earned accolades when its single, "No Need," was chosen by the Atlanta label Strange Bird Songs for a compilation CD of top songwriters in the U.S., including Michelle Malone and Indigo Girl Amy Ray. THE TIME COMES ON HUMMING TRACKS will announce to the indie-acoustic world an artist whose time has come, starting with the nearest pair of ears.
