Bio / Background
THE VILLAGE VOICE says:
" Maybe growing up in Nottinghamshire is what sets Jan Bell apart from the run of local lady folkies. Or maybe its the slide guitars, harmonicas, mandolins, and banjos. Either way, the dark old-timey spareness of her 'Between the Bridges' often suggests a Renaissance faire in the Mississippi Delta, and its title cut isn't even as gorgeous a New York ode as "I Want No Country,' one of the saddest, most skeptical, most plainspoken songs anybody wrote about 9/11/01. "
Chuck Eddy, Senior Editor, (June, 2002)
"Country blues that'll knock yer socks off!" Fayetteville Free Weekly, Arkansas
"In Jan's songs and voice, there is the strength and the struggles of all humanity. She is a truth teller, a true troubador, heart breaker and a heart mender." Samantha Parton, Singer/Songwriter - The Be Good Tanyas.
"One of the highlights of the d.u.m.b.o.arts festival." Time Out, New York.
"Thankyou for your wonderful musical artistry" Woody Guthrie Archives, nyc.
↓ more ↓"If you're looking for quality folk music, check out the anticipated arrival of "Calamity' Jan Bell" Good Times, Santa Cruz, CA.
"jan bell's heart is as wide as the space between the bridges, and as long as her funny bone "- Carl Blumenthal, Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
"Brief, brave and a breath of fresh air, Between the bridges is a hugely enjoyable tribute to the strength of the human heart, and the woman from whose heart it comes" - Mike Lyon, Editor Lincolnshire Echo, England.
Between the Bridges was recorded down by the East River in a roof studio at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. Three part harmony, violinist Rima Fand, and upright bass join forces to create an original country folk album.
Hailing from coal mining country in the north of England,Jan found her voice when she took to the american road and fell for the music of the Appelachians, the southern blues and the cowgirl lore and legend out west of the mississippi. Her songs are filled with a fleeting landscape of rivers and trains, mountain valleys and city rooftops.
Jan plays and produces the Urban Cowgirl Cabaret in Brooklyn featuring her band 'The BQ Easys' all on the back of a vintage pick up truck
'What a hoot!' Time Out, NY.
Selected performances include City University of New York, with the Woody Guthrie Archives; The Atlantic Antic Festival in Brooklyn; The dumbo arts festival; playing banjo barefoot along the women's mini marathon in Central park; and taking the Folk Train across Canada. In 1999 Jan founded little red hen music, an artist collective who work together on and off the road. "We dare you not to fall in love with this bunch! " Time Out,NY. www.littleredhenmusic.com
