Editorial review
"Pop music" has increasingly become a dirty phrase of sorts among rock fans in the early 21st century, which is understandable: the majority of pop music is either saccharine-sweet or slicked up beyond comprehension. But pop music wasn't always like this -- remember the good ol' days of Elvis Costello and Tom Petty? Johnny Action Figure certainly do, as evidenced by their sophomore release, the 2006 seven-track EP Asks the Room to Please Stop Spinning. The unmistakable jingle jangle of guitars kicks off the album-opener "Lose Our Face," while the group gently treads on emo territory with such selections as "(This is How I Look) When I Laugh at Death," and introduces Green Day-like power chords to the proceedings on "Francis." Johnny Action Figure is one of the few rock acts of the early 21st century that manages to combine pop sensibilities from yesterday without coming off retro at all. And the quartet deserves a pat on the back for issuing an album that sounds like a band playing live in a room together -- something that's sadly become an anomaly in the modern day pop world. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Johnny Action Figure is a rock n' roll band made up of best friends, each adding their own talent to create music they love to play. Hailing from Reading, Pennsylvania, a city 10 times more dangerous than Philly, the band have gotten into their fair share of gang-related warfare.
JAF takes a lot of their influence from great bands/artists like Elliot Smith, Elvis Costello, Koufax, and Tom Petty.
With a collection of demos from their high school days, the band assembled a proper full-length. They released the self-titled record on their own in March, 2004. You can pick up the record online here.
After playing countless shows, many with national acts such as Something Corporate, The Get Up Kids and Midtown, as well as a spot on the '04 Warped Tour, JAF won over hundreds of people throughout Pennsylvania and the tri-state area.
↓ more ↓Spring 2006 marks the release of their brand-new EP titled, "Johnny Action Figure Asks The Room To Please Stop Spinning" out proudly on Reading's own DRP Records. With 7 brand spankin' new tunes, JAF plans to deliver high-fives to the masses!
