BIO:
Derek's saxophone playing style influences include Kirk Whalum, Justo Almario, Grover Washington Jr and Richard Elliot. Derek began playing alto saxophone at age 11, picked up the tenor at age 14, and later added the soparano. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Derek sensed the call to ministry through the medium of contemporary jazz and resigned his presidential commission as a naval officer. When he heard Sharon sing and minister for the first time, Derek says that he experienced "audio visions" of accompanying her in song.
A native of Portland, Oregon, and a graduate of Florida A&M University, Sharon ministers in prophetic song to bring life and encouragement to listeners of all ages through the Holy Spirit. Singing "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs" (see Colossians 3:16) is one of Sharon's greatest enjoyments. Sharon is notably strong in prayer and has a heart that desires to bless others with the spontaneous "Song of the Lord".
Derek and Sharon, aka "Inspired Jazz", agree that music is a universal language that can be used to inspire, soothe, and encourage. Their musical stylings clearly cross cultural and generational lines. Their hope is that, through their music, the listener will be inspired to have and build a relationship with the living God, through faith in His only Son, Jesus Christ, "The Anointed One".
