Funky drums, deep bass, big horns, and smooth vocals. A melting pot of rock, jazz and funk creates a rich and layered sound. The Dorado sound.
Bio / Background
Dorado: Golden.
This group has been the dusty vision of Australian singer/guitarist Sky Cooper for 7 years….wait, let’s jump back;
26 years ago Sky’s family moved to America into a big group house in Somerville, Boston. The house where the first telephone was installed by an ambitious Alexander Graham Bell short on rent money. Rent Money: the necessity of invention. Now in 1981 the area was burnt out and kids sold crack on the front steps. Slowly the house’s young group of idealists moved the dealers away to another block and helped start a trend of gentrification making them known to the working class children of Italian immigrants as “Barneys”…OK-too far back! Let’s jump forward to ’95;
Sky decides to return to the States after living in Sydney for the previous 9 years. He is a rusty self taught guitar player leaving everything he knows to study jazz under legend Yusef Lateef.
↓ more ↓He still has scraps of an American accent that have stuck since his childhood time in Boston, and assimilation seems smooth.
At this very moment, unknown to Sky, Joe Trump has decided to leave NYC with his wife to start a family in a quieter neighborhood then Chelsea in Manhattan. He meets up with his wife in Portland Oregon while on tour and the decision is made.
4 years pass. Sky graduates with a music degree from Hampshire college and goes to work as a farm hand for $50 a week in Vermont. After a few months he catches a ride with a New England luthier to Boston and starts 3 years of wandering. Constantly trying to get recordings made, and a band together. This is tough going, but those stories can wait.
Meanwhile in Portland, Joe now has two children and has toned down the touring, running his own small carpentry outfit.
After Sept 11th Sky returns to the States after a brief bluegrass stint in Northern Queensland, Australia. Crashing on a friend’s floor in Oakland and canvassing on Market Street for Greenpeace. Dropping the final straw on his life-in-a-backpack existence is losing his clothes in an exploding laundry mat on Australia Day 2002.
A quick jazz gig gets a greyhound fare to Portland Oregon, where an old member of the Somerville group house has offered him a job in a woodwork shop. Anyone who's lived in Portland for a summer knows how appealing life can be here, and Sky is hooked.
Still hopelessly mailing out promos, the mail clerk invites him to a show where he meets Joe Trump. Jump ahead through 4 years as a janitor in a hospital to pay for the recording of Dorado’s debut album, to today….
“Dorado Sound” Is the debut album for Dorado. 24 musicians played on the album to create a thick bed of horns, guitars, turntables, and vocals. It is a rich landscape of funky tunes with catchy hooks, and big beats.
Eclectic like Beck. Funky like G Love and Jamiroquai. Laid back and original.
For live shows Dorado plays out with core members Sky Cooper (voc/guitar), Joe Trump (drums), John Gobel (bass), Steve Ellingson (keys), and a rotating cast of the area's best musicians, including a three piece horn section. Always different and vital. Check it out. It might make you smile!
Praise For Sky Cooper’s Last Album:
Popular sound and appeal-
Reviewer: Lindsay Moore- television producer, ABC-Family
“Sky Cooper's song [better days] was chosen from many other independent artists to be featured on our show for it's popular sound and promise to appeal to viewers of all ages. He made many fans, as suspected, and had one of the most downloaded songs when it was featured on our [ABC Family] website.“
Sky serves up tasteful original rock and roll like nothing else out there-
Reviewer: Cas Lucas - Bay Area Musician
”Sky picks up where guys like Dave Matthews and John Mayer leave off and takes it in a new, rich, jazzy, funky, soulful, carefully-crafted direction. I'm telling all my buddies to check his stuff out.
