Submerge yourself into the wild depths and listen to astonishing recordings of unimaginable sounds of the Humpback Whales feeding and communication calls in their underwater world. Pure organic whale talk with no music additives. 64 minutes on 30 tracks.
Bio / Background
The Humpback Whales are vocal with sounds beyond imagination. This CD is not the familiar recordings of gentle ocean sounds and whales singing in the distance. These whales are in your face! You will hear the Humpbacks interacting with breathtaking underwater sounds and calls, the trumpeting sound of their breathing, and the water rippling off of these gentle giants bodies. Finally a CD for worldwide whale enthusiasts, where the whale calls are exciting, rapid, and sometimes startling. This CD will blow the lid off of the belief that humpbacks just sing.
"Our hope is that this collection of sounds, created by humpback whales at their feeding grounds in Alaska, will help bring attention to the fact that every person has a responsibility to protect and care for the world’s oceans and their magnificent inhabitants."
Guest performances by the Transient and Resident Orcas. Total length 64 minutes. Recorded in Southeast Alaska Humpback Whale feeding grounds.
↓ more ↓About the recordings: In process
All of these recordings were made with a single hydrophone at about 60 feet down. No out of water microphone was used.
Track #1 “A Discussion Among Whales” Recorded in early August.
This recording is of 5 or so whales as they pass very close to the hydrophone. At the beginning is the rising call followed by some talk and then a second less commonly heard rising call again followed by even more talk. The rising call is made prior to the whales surfacing while cooperative feeding. This is a very high quality and clear recording. In this recording you can hear the turbulence in the water caused by the whales.
Track #6 “Schreech” Recorded in late August. Three whales passed by in search for food. Our depth sounder screen was not picking up the usual schools of feed today. After the whales reached the shoreline, two turned around and one continued on, following the kelp line near shore. The recording is of the two whales calling to the third to follow and the schreech is from the third whale in response.
Track # 7 “Whale Talk” Recorded in mid August. This is an excellent recording of a great variety of sounds the whales are capable of. It also has the trumpet call, made during the exhale. This sound though very loud above water is also very clearly heard under the water. It is heard 24 seconds into the recording. There are also a couple of nice loud breaths at 1:06min. and 1:13min.
Track # 12 “Foggy Day Breaching” Recorded in early August. Today the fog was very thick. Visibility was less than two hundred yards. We found the whales by traveling a ways, shutting down the engines and listening. After numerous times we finally began hearing them. The last stop, Tamara, who was on the bow, said she could smell their breaths. We stayed there and waited. Suddenly we were surrounded. In the recording you can hear the sounds of peck slapping and the magnificent swooshing sound of the whales coming out of the water in full breaches. It was nothing less than magical. The whales appearing out of the fog all around us. Listen to the peck slap heard at the beginning at 0:12 followed by breaches at 0:35min. and 1:10min. again followed by peck slaps. This track also has great recordings of “Baby Talk” heard at 3:00min., 4:25min. and 4:40min. which sounds like ‘a-a-chooo’!
The “Calls” These are various common calls that are often heard.
Track # 16 “Yodeling” Recorded in mid August. In this recording you hear the rising call with one whale answering, then the first whale does an amazing singing yodel which is followed by possibly a third whale making a trumpeting call. This is a great example of the whales control over their voice.
Track #25 “The Secret” Recorded in mid June. Today a whale came over while we were drifting along. It dove under the boat and stayed there for the longest time and just gently talked and talked. It was like the whale was telling us a special story. In the recording you can hear the air being moved inside the whales head and body. I have also been trying to confirm two sounds that are possibly the heart beats of the whale. Listen carefully at 0:16 and 0:25 min. A beautiful recording!
Track # 27 “Orcas Teaching” Recorded in late August. Today we came upon some orcas in the process of teaching their young to hunt. A stellar sea lion had been injured and as we watched the adult orcas would make attacks and the young orcas would then copy them. They were breaching onto the sea lion, tail slapping it, throwing it around, and charging at it. Sometimes the young orcas would completely miss. We watched for nearly a half hour.
Track # 28 “Resident Orcas on the Move” Recorded in early September. Today we observed a super pod of resident orcas traveling out towards the ocean. They were spread over many square miles. Much of the sound recorded was of the many dozens of the orcas using their sonar. All together it sounds more like background noise but listen carefully. It still gives me goose bumps listening to it.
Track 29 “ Resident Orcas Sonar” Recorded in early September. This is a powerful recording of some resident orcas communication and hunting close by. Now go back and listen to track 28 again.
