A Flatpicking King with lighting speed. This Country Bluegrass Album is also called Americana.
Editorial review
It seems fair to say that for every country star crooning under his cowboy hat in the spotlight, there are several pickers standing just behind him in the shadows thinking to themselves, "I can play rings around this guy. I can sing, I can write, and I'm not bad looking. Why am I here on salary while he's out there getting the big bucks?" There's no way of knowing whether Brad Davis has ever mused in this way to himself as he's played guitar behind Marty Stuart, Earl Scruggs, Billy Bob Thornton, the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, and the Forester Sisters, and recorded with them, as well as Sheryl Crow, Warren Zevon, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and Pam Tillis. But if he did, there would be some justice in his attitude. On This World Ain't No Child, his second FGM (short for Fingerpicking Guitar magazine) release, Davis writes or co-writes all 12 songs, sings in an engaging, if not overwhelmingly distinctive, tenor, and, of course, picks a superior acoustic guitar as well as his own self-designed Brad Bender, accompanied by such buddies and bandmates as Thornton (who applies his limited voice to "Shadows"), Sam Bush, John Jorgenson, B?la Fleck, and Tommy Shaw of Styx. Especially on the album's first several tracks, the players turn in some terrific bluegrass-style work, but the quality of the performing extends throughout the disc. The songs are a bit stronger than those on Davis' 2003 collection I'm Not Gonna Let My Blues Bring Me Down, so that this is not just a glorified picking session. But that may mean the album won't so much launch the artist as a recording star as it will serve the function of a publishing demo to get the tunes to more established acts. If so, the disc may mean another step on Davis' trip to solo stardom. If not, he's still not likely ever to be out of work. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Having spent the last fifteen years performing on stage as a member of Marty Stuart's road band, playing lead acoustic guitar with Earl Scruggs and Friends, and playing lead electric and acoustic guitar with Billy Bob Thornton's rock band, Brad Davis now brings his acoustic guitar and songwriting talent to the forefront with the release of his new solo recording This World Ain’t No Child. This album not only presents Brad’s unique blend of acoustic blues, rock, country, and bluegrass and highlights his vocal, songwriting, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and bass talents, its real excitement is the interaction between Brad and some of the world's most talented musicians from the bluegrass, newgrass, country, and rock genres.
In addition to playing lead electric and acoustic guitars on the road with Marty Stuart for over ten years, Brad Davis also played on Marty's gold selling album "This Ones Gonna Hurt You," the Marty Stuart "Hit Pack," and Marty's latest MCA recording "The Pilgrim.
↓ more ↓" Brad played on the soundtrack of Steven Seagal's "Fire Down Below," and performed music for Billy Bob Thornton's upcoming Miramax releases "Daddy And Them" and "Waking Up In Reno."
Brad also recorded two new album projects featuring Billy Bob Thornton on Mercury and has toured both Europe and the United States as the lead guitar player for Billy Bob Thornton's band. Additionally, Brad has worked for, or recorded with, Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, Pam Tillis, The Forester Sisters, The Sweethearts of the Rodeo, and currently tours with Billy Bob Thornton, and banjo legend Earl Scruggs as the lead guitar player for the band Earl Scruggs & Friends. Additonally, Brad will tour extensively in 2003 as the lead guitar player for the Sam Bush Band and play select solo dates to promote his CD's "I'm Not Gonna Let My Blues Get Me Down" and "This World Ain't No Child." Brad is currently fiming a new TV show called Commerce County Line and has been working with Billy Bob Thornton and his new album and touring with David Lee Roth with the John Jorgenson Band and their new album "Strummin' With The Devil: A Tribute To Van Helen."
