Accoustic piano trio playing original funk/latin/rock infused jazz. One of the most exciting and promising young groups from the Pacific Northwest.
Editorial review
Pianist Ben Darwish makes his recording debut as a leader with Industrial Hero, a trio session with bassist Zach Wallmark and drummer Drew Shoals, all of them still working on or having recently completed a college degree at the time of these 2006 sessions. Drawing from many musical styles, including jazz, rock, Latin music and hip-hop, Darwish clearly has plenty of chops, though he is still finding his voice as a composer. His songs are enjoyable, especially the ominous, in your face opener "Impressions of a Lurking Menace" and the Latin-falvored "Birds Over Buoyancy," yet they often feel like impromptu jams rather than songs that will leave a lasting impression. His whimsical arrangement of The Beatles' "Hey Bulldog" is a nice surprise. Wallmark contributed the funky "Perpetuity" and made a valiant attempt to turn Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" into a meaningful jazz vehicle, though it's bland, monotonous melody ends up a musical dead end. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Formed in October of 2005, the Ben Darwish Trio is a an acoustic piano trio. They play almost entirely original music with a wide range of influences, including jazz, hip-hop, rock, and latin. Led by pianist and composer, Ben Darwish, this group is climbing quickly in the music scene. In only 6 months, they’ve played over thirty shows at premier jazz clubs in Portland and Eugene. Some venues include:
The Blue Monk
Luna Jazz Club
Roots Brewing
Jo Federigo’s
The Rose and Raindrop
Portland Arts Pavilion
Although they are all students, they find time to gig regularly. In December of 2005, they were joined by exceptional young saxophonist, John Nastos, for a sold out show at the Blue Monk.

“Among other things, the right to assembly guarantees that a maniacally talented cadre of young jazz beaux like these can plot the night away in a darkened basement with no fear of the Man. Dabbling in revolutionary delight, the Ben Darwish Trio tosses off incendiary originals, fiery jazz chestnuts and swing with wicked abandon (courtesy the ebullient momentum of drummer Drew Shoals). They're joined by home-for-the-holidays saxophonist John Nastos, a breathtakingly talented young-man-with-a-horn wise beyond his tender years”
