CD Review - Dan Barbeau and The Basement Party - Requiem for a Rockabilly (2007) What do you do when you've had a long, hard day of boppin, roddin', redneckin' and hell raisin' with your sugar dumplin'? My suggestion: take her back to your place, pour some whiskey, relax and listen to an album like this. You might-could even do some slow dancin'. It won't rev. you (or her) up like straight-up rockabilly, though it has a lot of the same sound. All the tracks are based in either country or rock but all seem to have blues influence helped along with heavy use of harmonica in some tracks. The album title makes sense, eh? I am very picky with the level of producing of rockabilly albums (especially with over-producing), but kudos to this one for 'not over cooking the vegetables.' The sad irony is reflected on ?I Love Just One Way.? ?Cram Dem Blues? and ?Where He Been At? show some chops that probably deserve a pack of smokes and a PBR. ?The Church? has a heavy George Jones & Tammy Wynette influence. And ?Epitaph? proves it's not all a sham. It shouldn't be pretty. Nothing in life really, is so let's raise our bottles and enjoy something dirty. We deserve it. Dan Barbeau may not make the pain go away but he'll make you feel better now, at least until his music is declared a Threat to the Union. ..
