Acoustic songwriter/pianist/singer with jazz, folk, pop influences
Editorial review
Folk-jazz pianist and vocalist Anna Dagmar Johnson offers up nine tracks of both spring breezes and guarded insights on her debut CD, One More Time in the Air. Comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos are probably inevitable, since Johnson takes similar excursions in to jazzier territory than most folk artists, while experimenting with dark chords and moods like Amos and Fiona Apple do. The harrowing "Loser" lays Johnson's affected voice and acoustic piano over a gritty digital drum beat and sparse feedback, while the title track toys with the melody line like something off of Court and Spark. As is often the case on debut CDs, the artist seems to try to cover too much ground on the album, ranging from improv-sounding contemporary classical to pop to jazz to rock, all within the span of four songs. Each of these styles is done well, but when Johnson focuses on one voice, she'll be even more successful. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
STOCKHOLM DEBUT - April 3rd at the Obar! Tell your European friends!
Anna Dagmar was born in England, grew up in Massachusetts, and began taking piano lessons and writing music at the age of seven. Interested in a wide range of genres, she pursued studies in classical, jazz, and composition. Her love of songwriting developed while singing harmonies for Boston-area performer Meghan Toohey. Following high school, Anna earned a scholarship to the Eastman School of Music, where she completed a degree in jazz performance and music education, and then moved to her current New York City residence.
One More Time in the Air, Anna's debut CD, combines jazz, folk, and pop styles, and reflects the influences of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Keith Jarrett, and Jonatha Brooke. Ranging from energetic to introspective, the music features crisp harmonies, rich lyrics, and sweeping improvisations. Unique instrumental arrangements color each song.
