Smooth, soft, exhilarating, enchanting, romantic. Classically-trained, delicate fingering. Alan Miceli on YouTube. "Chef-Musician".
Bio / Background
I am influenced by the natural environment - I live in one of Canada's most beautiful places, a mountainous, wooded island off the west coast. Many of my titles invoke aspects of nature - Rainpools, Autumn, Under the Mist, Winter.
Although I am influenced by the natural environment, I am inspired by music itself, by the sound of the guitar, by the excitement of hearing a few notes strung together in such a way as to create a thrill or perhaps give a more subtle pleasure.
It is really the sound of the guitar itself that provides me with my greatist inspiration.

ALAN MICELI, acoustic guitarist, is an emerging BC Folk Artist, “with a bullet”. He was discovered by NY Folk icon Christine Lavin who put his instrumental Mocha Java on her new ONE MEAT BALL CD.(available from CDbaby). It keeps climbing on Folk Charts in the US. CBC’s Jurgen Gothe of DiscDrive named One Meat Ball #15 in his annual Folk/Blues Chart. CFRO Vancouver placed the CD in their top 10 Folk/Blues in November. And Mocha Java was one of the two top songs on the CD which listed as #38 for the month of January on a 150-s
Alan Miceli’s Mocha Java, a percolating little tune, has been getting airplay from New York to Baton Rouge, from St. Louis to Fort Bragg, CA and throughout Canada.
On a recent Canadian Content listing of 85 American Folk Radio stations, MICELI was one of only 13 BC Artists receiving American airplay. He is one of only 5 Canadian acts in the top 40 CD’s for January on the FolkDJ-L chart.
His music is Smooth. Soft. Exhilarating. Enchanting. Folk guitar at its finest. Delicately fingered melodies. Hear the magic of Cathedral Grove, laugh at the Errington Way and hear the sounds of the environment even more in Rain, Rainpools, or Under the Mist. He is currently working on his next CD, Testaments of Honour, inspired by the Great War, to be released this fall. (bookings for Remembrance Day Ceremonies anniep@saltspring.com)
Miceli seems to have a visceral connection with his audiences—not just his music but his engaging wit—he has fun between the most evocative guitar solos, and so do his audiences —and people just stream up to buy his CD’s!
This is a cinderella story. Alan Miceli is a pastry chef on a small island off the West Coast. He is also a classically trained guitarist. Christine Lavin, a top American satirical singer/songwriter, has recorded more than twenty albums. She is outrageously funny, garrulous, witty, edgy. Of course: she lives in New York City. So what's a nice, quiet Canadian guitarist doing hanging out with her?
Her newest CD, One Meatball - Christine Lavin and Friends is a collection of "foodie songs and recipes" from friends such as Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton , Jeff Daniels! And the late Dave Van Ronk - 19 friends and a 96 page cookbooklet of their favourite recipes.
And from Salt Spring Island, B.C., Canada, Alan Miceli. While still keeping his day job as a pastry chef, Miceli recorded his first CD The Spaces Between in 2002 and immediately started getting airplay. It was produced by Jordy Sharp, who has produced all of Harry Manx' work ( who blends the blues with Hindu classical music). Both artists reflect a depth of feeling and sensitivity in their music because of their past experience with eastern spirituality.
His second CD, Errington Way, received wider notice, and now he has had interviews and airplay on CBC, NPR, U.S. and Canadian University and Community Radio, Satellite Radio, and Internet Radio stations.
Alan Miceli's tranquil guitar instrumental Mocha Java is the perfect coffee break, says Lavin. Their meeting on Salt Spring Island, she says was destiny. She had been thinking of doing a food album when Valdy put Miceli on the stage to open for her at a Salt Spring Folk Club event. "As soon as I heard him play, I knew I wanted him on the project. I loved him so much. When he offered a copy of his blueberry pie recipe with each album sold, it nailed it for me!" Miceli submitted his recipe for Espresso Chocolate Tart for the One Meat Ball cookbooklet. (To die for as is his music!)
A DVD profile showing him baking the by now famous blueberry pie cut away with his making magical music on his guitar in his Kitchen was filmed by Shaw TV. Cooking Show Programmers: listen up and get in touch
