Singer/songwriter Dan Radmacher has teamed up with producers Michael Lee and Steve Merrick to create his new recording ?In the Space Between,? which was released by Modrocker Music on Feb 28th. Following up on his highly-acclaimed debut project ?Dan Radmacher and the Evensong Band,? Dan has compiled an impressive and stirring collection of his own worship material. Ranging from quiet and contemplative to raw and unrestrained, all of the material on this release expresses the tension of living ?in the space between.? Dan comments on this theme:
?Living one's life means always dealing with the tension of living in the space between one reality and another. We are all always in transition?spiritually or otherwise?and that creates the peculiar dilemma of living with uncertainty and hope, despair and ecstasy, longing and fulfillment superimposed on one another. These songs were written for people in those moments, and I think communicate to everyone, because we are all at various points on that journey.?
The title track profoundly punctuates this dilemma, suggesting ?I'm caught in the space between who I am and who I'll be.? An intimate and honest glimpse into the soul of the songwriter, it gently caresses the listener who finds himself or herself struggling on the road of becoming. ?I wrote this song for a friend who was unable to fully release his past,? Dan recalls, ?but I found that it applied as much to me or anyone as it did to him.? Quiet, sparse piano and soothing cello administer this balm, backed by a sturdy rhythm section; this tune would sound at home next to the music of Sarah MacLachlan.
On the other end of the musical spectrum, ?Behind the Curtain? asks poignant metaphysical questions about what will be revealed when the curtain of creation is finally pulled back and all is brought to light. Rugged electric guitar riffs alternate with stark silence to illustrate the existential angst of living by faith, not sight, and anticipating the reality of eternity. Reminiscent of Evanessence, this tune will catch you off-guard musically as well as lyrically, stimulating the mind while pleasing the ear.
Another ear-catching musical icon is the high-energy worship chorus, ?Faithful and True,? which urges the listener to worship God with the same abandon as the whole of creation. Dan remarks ?I was struck by how creation demonstrates a complete lack of self-consciousness in its worship, and I wanted to urge my congregation to do the same.? The pounding rhythm section and wailing blues harp emphasize one of the key lines, ?if the rocks aspire to break the silence, then let the people sing!?
Dan got his start as a worship leader at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California, and released his first project in 2002. While pursuing music full-time, he continues to lead worship for Christ Church Pasadena in southern California and for the spiritual formation retreats at Talbot Seminary in La Mirada.
