Cliff Hedley is based in Auckland New Zealand. His debut album Sink & Swim was completed after he returned from living in London, having earned a grant from NZ On Air to record the first single, Overcoat. This was recorded primarily at Studio 203 with Andrew Buckton producing. After that, Hedley set about forming a band, with members Andre Birt, AJ Hay and Brent Martin collaborating on the rest of the album.
The music Hedley writes can best be described as "alt-rock", with an underlying pop sensibility. Influenced by the likes of Pearl Jam, nirvana and many others from the Seattle grunge scene, he also draws from the likes of Weezer, Sublime, Coldplay and even the Beatles.
As the band moved forward and solidified their rock credentials, a renaming took place - while the group had been playing as the "Cliff Hedley Band" - a fairly obvious name given to them a by a past promoter - they decided that a band name would best represent the music as it had evolved. The band, now joined by bassist Micaela Bonnar, are known today as "This Paper City" and have recorded enough material for a second album, with more tracks on the way.
