June & Jean Millington started their first all-girl band in the '60's and by the end of the decade had a record deal with their band Fanny. They toured the U.S. and Europe, recorded at Apple Studios and were on every big television show of the era, sharing the stage with Sly and the Family Stone, Chicago, Chuck Berry, Dr. John, The Staples Singers and many others. David Bowie said of the group in Rolling Stone magazine, ? They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time.... They were extraordinary: They wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers.
.. They are as important as anyone else who's ever been, ever....? (January 2000) The Millington sisters have continued to make great music ever since.
June is the only woman who played both in the beginning of women in rock and the early women's music movement. In the '80's she and Jean (who took time off from her career to have two children) united to release a series of albums. In 1987 June co-founded the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) to support women and girls in music and music-related business. The highly successful school now runs rock programs for girls in the summer. The title cut of the CD "Play Like a Girl" is inspired by their musical journey and their work with girls in the rock camps, who sing on several of the songs.
