Sonny started his musical career on guitar. He took 2 years of lessons from Skip Westphal. Westphal, from Aurora, is a classically trained guitarist, who stressed the importance of playing without a pick. Sonny added bass to his repertoire in 1985 and played in a few bands in the Cleveland area. Most notable of those bands were The Janglers and Al's Fast Freight. In 2003, he made the move back to guitar and added pedal steel to the roster.
In 1999, Sonny earned a degree in Music from Cleveland State University. Later that year he opened the Sonny Miller Guitar Studio. This is where Jewels Dance Hall was recorded. Jewels Dance Hall, released in 2005, features former Jangler Will Douglas and Sonny on drums and bass respectively. Sonny overdubbed all the remaining instruments (pedal steel, guitar, vocals and keyboards).
Today, Sonny is playing with Al's Fast Freight and the Cedar Creek Band (see calendar). As well as other bands and recording projects.
Sonny's style has been described as: A Midwestern singer/songwriter that creates material with a bluesy/country edge. Running the range from boogie blues to slow ballads and all points in-between.
