Richard Huggins was born in Oklahoma City, OK, September 10, 1947. Though the son of a physician, his interests tuned early to music when, at age 5, he began to pick out notes heard at a wedding. Lessons followed and eventually also encompassed organ study. Heavily involved in the music program of his church, Richard was influenced by the emerging musical tastes and styles that characterized Christian music of that day.
Heavily involved in the music program of his church, Richard was influenced by the emerging musical tastes and styles that characterized Christian music of that day. Particularly was he influenced by a Christian pianist of the day named Max Lyall. Lyall's gift of inventive harmonic improvisation planted within Richard a desire to not only play that well but also to play improvisationally at that level. His formal music training concluded at Oklahoma Baptist University, 1969.
Other influences of his day were from the jazz music of Dave Brubeck, the music of Christian songwriters Ralph Carmichael and Kurt Kaiser and the vocal harmonies of the Johnny Mann Singers and the Anita Kerr Singers. Finally he was heavily influenced by the film composer, Henry Mancini and classical composer Maurice Ravel.
Richard resides in east Texas where he works as a freelance arranger, composer, music editor and performer. He also plays at a local church.
