Paul Fried was born in 1947 in Englewood New Jersey. He began his studies with his father Milton Fried, a professional musician, at the age of 7. At the age of 8 - 1955- Fried began studying with the legendary Julius Baker at the Juilliard Preparatory School ( 1955 - 1958) on Full Scholarship. He played on the Arthur Godrey show at the age of 10, and played the Mozart G Major Flute concerto that same year with the Suburban Symphony, an orchestra which also included his father and two brothers. He also performed with the graduate students in the upper school at Juilliard.
Fried later moved with his family to Las Vegas, where his father played in the Sahara Hotel Band. In addition to being influenced by Julius Baker, Fried has also studied with Eugene Foster and Marcel Moyce. Fried graduated Juilliard ( college) in 1970. He joined the Boston Symphony in September of that year, as one of the youngest woodwind players to ever play in the BSO.
Fried held the position of Assistant Principal Flute of the BSO from 1970 to 1982. He was also Solo Flutist of the Boston Pops under both Arthur Fiedler and John Williams. Fried has also performed as Solo Flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic - in 1977 - and was Co - Principal Flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1982 - 1985, and Solo Flutist of the New York Chamber Symphony ( Y Chamber Orchestra) in 1986.
Paul has lived in Los Angeles CA since September 1985 and been Solo flute and piccolo, for many movies including many of the Lethal Weapon and Die Hard movies, as well as movies such as Anastasia Ice Age, Hoffa, Robin Hood, and many others. In the last few years Paul Fried has given concerts and master classes in China and Japan.
Fried is currently Solo Flute of the New West Symphony Orchestra. His solo CDs are sold at paulfried.com, CDbaby.com, Simplicityrecords.com and Musicminusone.com. His latest recording is his arrangement and performance with the Czech Symphony Chamber Orchestra on the Music Minus One Label of the Vivaldi Four Seasons.
