Songs of the sea, the salty air, and the great abyss beyond the shoreline. This is New Providence. The band formed near the edge of Halifax harbour, meeting in the stone hallways of the University of King's College. Ten musicians with a mutual love for not just the shanty, but all forms of folk within and beyond the shores of Nova Scotia. The arrangements sound like a twisted chamber orchestra, with a punchy pop melody on top. Performances are riotous, with shouting, clapping, stomping, accordians, violins, clarinets, flutes and hungarian zithers send the spirit soaring.
Listen to New Providence when your sails are in need of wind, or the sidewalk starts to look like a plank - and you too will find yourself drifting in that great abyss, tasting the salty air.
