Marjen is something of an enigma. Not much is known about the bearded man with a love for the sound of drums and the crackling of old records. What is known is that he started making music in 2000, although none of that music had ever been widely released until the release of 'you are here. so am i.', Marjen's professional debut album. This was also the inaugural release of Non-Existent Recordings.
Marjen keeps his music dark, emphasizing the drums and layers of minor note melodies, combining the sounds of dusty, half forgotten records with those of various keyboards and drum machines. It is music that, while clearly inspired by years of listening to hip hop, goes beyond the sometimes narrow boundaries of the genre and appeals to more than just hip hop fans without sounding forced or like a crossover attempt.
One day the whole world will know his name. Until then, he can be found spending his paycheques on cheap records at various record stores and thrift shops and wasting time on the Internet when he should be working on music and listening to the aforementioned records.
