British/French pianist and composer born in 1977. James Uhart originally began performing wth bassist Justin Purtill and drummer Julien Augier de Moussac in 1999, at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Since then, they've based themselves in New York City, released three albums, London (2002), Camels' Dance (2003) and Time Away (2005) and performed extensively in Eastern USA and the UK, gaining a reputation as 'New York's rising stars' (Jazz After Dark) James is now based in London.
As well as the three trio albums, James Uhart has recorded two more albums: Conversation (2007) - a duo album with vocalist Gino Sitson and Light as an Elephant (Soon to be released) featuring his trio + Gino Sitson.
Weaving dyamic interpretations of jazz standards with James' charismatic compositions in the vein of Brad Mahldau and Abdullah Ibrahim, the trio's style has contributed significantly to the resurgence of the traditional instrumental format . Vocalists are regularly added to the format, such as Gino Sitson or Amy Winehouse, who teamed up with the trio during their recent UK tour.
Combining his European roots with the American musical tradition in composition, band leader James Uhart has created a unique and exciting form of jazz.
