Boomchix was formed by Janice (vocals, guitar & songwriter), Barb (vocals & mandolin) and Shelley Brown (vocals & bass). They performed either as a trio or with drummer Ed Goodine until Shelley made the decision to pick up her life and move it to Vancouver Island. Just before she left, Janice and Barb decided it was time they went into the studio to record bed tracks for what would become their debut CD "Surprise Surprize"
Produced by Marc L'Esperance and Janice Dunbar, the CD was released in November 2006, and features a stellar musical cast; Shelley Brown (Flying Accusations, WiseAcre) - acoustic bass & BG vocals, Ed Goodine (Knotty Pines, Rodney DeCroo) - drums, Linda McRae (singer/songwriter, Knotty Pines, Rodney DeCroo) - electric bass, Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley, Knotty Pines) - acoustic/electric lead guitar & banjo, Meredith Bates (Microscopic, Heartwarmongering) - violin, and Marc L'Esperance (Pleasure Suit, Ghettoblaster, Monica Lee Band, Conrad) - drums/percussion & mandolin.
"...One need listen no further than Boomchix awe-inspiring debut release, Surprise Surprize, to hear the difference a little bit of soul can make: Sweet melodies, honest lyrics, world-class musicianship and damn near perfect production..." - R. C. Joseph - "Listen to Me" 24 hours
"Authentic, and warm... Amazing vocal harmonies, pro but not slick musicianship, and an underlying sense of humour make for one of the best Roots albums to come out of Vancouver in years." - Red Cat Records
While recording the CD, Barb and Janice began to re-invent Boomchix - the band - first with Meredith Bates on violin, and electric bass-man supreme John Werner drivin' the bottom end. A couple of drummers later, and Benny Strylove got on board to keep the beat and the girls smilin'. In July of 2006 surf-punk rock-a-twangin' Gord (Gorehound) Smithers jumped in with his electric guitar at the last minute as a standin for Meredith at the band's first show at the Railway Club. After only one rehearsal together, and an amazingly fun show - they knew that their sound was complete, and the current Boomchix line-up was formed.
In performance, Boomchix likes to rock that roots music! Shows are energetic and fun! Come see!
?Surprise, Surprize defines Janice as a creative and passionate songwriter, and the BoomChix as a must-catch live local act.
