No traditional blues here. My kind of blues,70's influenced, Rock-blues. you got to listen. My real goal is to play the music I feel.
Editorial review
European blues fans, like European jazz fans, are a highly enthusiastic bunch; they aren't nearly as large a group as the European rock audience, but they are quite devoted. And Europe has given us some talented blues artists. Among them: Sven Zettenberg from Sweden, Ana Popovic from the former Yugoslavia and Robi Zonca from Italy. Of course, being Italian does not mean that a bluesman is obligated to play with Italians exclusively -- and on Magic Box (which was recorded live in Zonca's home town of Bergamo, Italy on March 9, 2006) singer/guitarist Zonca and four fellow Italians (guitarist Stefano Galli, bassist Paolo Legramandi, drummer Marco Sacchitella and keyboardist Antonello "Jantoman" Aguzzi) are joined by New Orleans bluesman Luther Kent. Although Zonca and Kent share the lead vocals, Kent sings more often -- and Zonca's American guest is in very good form on performances of Big Joe Turner's "Flip, Flop and Fly," and Willie Dixon's "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man." Like a lot of people in the modern blues scene, Zonca is blues-oriented without being a blues artist. He has rock and R&B influences as well, and this Italian concert reflects that. Kent's soul credentials are obvious on inspired performance of Benny Latimore's 1974 hit "Let's Straighten It Out" (which is bluesy soul or soul-blues, not straight-ahead blues), Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Nothing You Can Do" and the Meters' "Hey, Pock-a-Way" (a prime example of Crescent City funk). Before this live recording, Zonca provided some studio recordings that are worth owning. But Magic Box is more essential, and it is the most logical album to start out with if one if making his/her first Zonca purchase. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Robi Zonca is the first indipendent italian artist widely broadcasted in the U.S.A.
In the past Robi played as sideman with the great Ginger Baker, with Andy J Forest, with James Tomphson, Ronnie Jones and many more, but now he leads his own band.
Several radios in New York City area have choosen songs from Robi's last cd "DO YOU KNOW?" after Bob Putignano, president of NY blues & jazz society, start trasmitting Robi's music from his program "Sounds of Blue"
At this time more than 90 radio stations all around the States are broadcasting songs from "DO YOU KNOW?"
The album recieved airplay at: WUCF,WCNI,WQLN,KYNR,WMPG,
WZEW,KLPZ,KMGN,KZIQ,KMET,KSTR,WKSX,KIND,WHAY,KKGB,WJDF,
WFAT,KRXL,KZPR,WKTX,KBDN,WUZI,WJES,WKVL,WMVA,KPND,WAUH,
WIUJ,KGUM,CKCK.... and so on, too long to write the complete list of the radio stations broadcasting songs from "DO YOU KNOW?"
The same is happening in these days in Europe.
↓ more ↓In particular the N1 blues radio in Amsterdam "BLUE EARS" choose 8 songs from his album for his high rotation music http://www.blueears.com/
My real goal is to play the music I feel. I do not try to play like the great black masters did, I do not try to play the tradition, I do not try to play a new kind of blues, I do not try to recuperate sounds from the past or something...... I just sit down, write the songs playing in my head, and then stand up and play it with my band . That's it!
