Bio / Background
All members, Kevin Prchal, Michael Lojkutz, Scott Turner, and Martin Fornelli at age 23, have spent enough time around music and so-called “scenes” to know what their music is not; however defining what it is becomes a more complicated task. If one thread seems common among the six-track, self-titled EP, it is the courage for boldness. There is a mix between a slick rock sound that is nowhere near pop-punk, and intimate lyrics with detailed composition that is too focused for indie rock. No label seems rightfully fitting for the sound other than music with a purpose. “The purpose behind this band is to write music that we've always wanted to hear. Music that might mean nothing to you, but still means the world to us.
↓ more ↓Music, that if anything, we can one day hold in our hands and tell our grandchildren, ‘This was my band,” lead vocals and guitarist, Kevin Prchal explains, “Being in a creative environment that allows me to sit here and say that, is one of the greatest feelings I could possibly imagine.”
Making music is a form of expression, but also a medium of change for The Young Sea; it is their second time around as band mates. All four members made up the lineup of Triptii, who gained moderate success with their EP, The Lifecycle. The group decided the band was not delivering the message nor the sound they aspired for and called it quits in February of 2006. Throughout the next year, playing only sparsely together, the realization came they now had the freedom to start fresh; to be creative and boundless. Progress also led to the addition of Neil Hynneman (Captain Cinch, Owl, Bullet For Breathing) to the band’s lineup as a multi-instumentalist.
The lyrics and distinct sound of The Young Sea provide a challenge to listeners. Lead guitarist, Michael Lojkutz explains, “We want to challenge ourselves and our audience as listeners. We hope to make people think about our music and lyrics and are compelled to validate or change their views or attitudes. That is what the best music does.”
