Editorial review
Imagine the saddest voice singing yet another sad tale of a man leaving a woman. The odd thing in this instance, however, is the fact that the singer doesn't really blame him. "I won't stop you when you go/'Cause I'd leave me too." "I'd Leave Me Too" is a refreshing kickoff to an album that just gets better with delicious country & western romps like "Shove It." Audrey Auld's authenticity, curiously, doesn't hail from Texas or Tennessee, but from Australia. The Fallen's arrival on native shores gives notice that, first, country music has long ceased to be a strictly American phenomenon, and second, that Outback country & western may have a thing or two to teach sterile Nashville. Songs like "Too Far to Fall" and "Still Holding On" feature honest-to-God pedal steel and a jaunty country shuffle. Auld's voice cracks and breaks in the classic tradition of singers like Kitty Wells and Loretta Lynn. There's a great duet with Dale Watson on "Jackson" and a good take on Fred Eaglesmith's "Alcohol and Pills." Drummer Doug Gallacher pushes a number of these songs into high gear with a steady backbeat, while Michel Rose lays down some lovely dobro and steel. Auld has written ten good songs, embracing every style from classic country to Western swing. Delivered with confidence and style, The Fallen is an excellent debut. ~ Ronnie D. FIRST STUDIO RECORDINGS IN ALMOST A DECADE!
Laughing Outlaw Records are ecstatic to bring to you the first studio recordings by Sydney punk legends X in almost a decade.
Steve Lucas and Ian Rilen have kicked rock 'n' roll savagely in the caboose for 25 years as X and to celebrate their 'Silver Jubilee' together, a brand new line up of the band have recorded this fine collection of 'balls to the wall' punk anthems as only X can do.
The EP was recorded at the Clubhouse, engineered by Dave Evans and Geoff Holmes and mixed by Richard Muecke. The sound is quintessential X, capturing the spirit and sound of the original phase of the band's career. Stripped back to two guitars, bass and pounding drums, the songs are loud, fast and hit the listener right in the guts where it hurts so good.
↓ more ↓X are now:
Steve Lucas - lead vocals/guitar
Ian Rilen - vocals/bass
Geoff Holmes - guitar
Cath Synnerdahl - drums
And to continue the great news, in May 2003, Laughing Outlaw will be releasing a milestone live recording of the above line up of X, recorded at Sydney's Basement nightclub in December 2002. This fantastic sounding double CD set will contain a comprehensive retrospective of the past 25 years of X, featuring many special guests.
With a bunch of CD launch gigs booked in Sydney and Melbourne during April and May for the EP and the double live CD set, 2003 will truly be the Royal Silver Jubilee Year of X!
REVIEWS:
"This X is not the LA band, but rather the Sydney, Australia, punkers, here represented by their first studio recordings in nearly 10 years. Spearheaded by vocalist/guitarist Steve Lucas and vocalist/bassist Ian Rilen, I Love Rock 'n' Roll is a five-song EP that recaptures all of the fury of the halcyon days of 1977. From the feedback-laced beginnings of "Ooh Baby" to the anthem-like guitars of "Where Did I Go Wrong?" to the total mondo blitzkrieg of "I Love Rock 'n Roll" ("especially in the f*%ckin' rain"), this disk kicks ass and takes names." -Amplifier
"The I Love Rock 'n' Roll EP is a classic, roaring skull-cracker which kids like The Vines and White Stripes can only emulate." - Daily Telegraph
"Ragged magnificence from one of our all-time favourites, the seemingly unstoppable, un-killable X, this time on the ever-expanding Sydney label, Laughing Outlaw." - I94 Bar Website
