Editorial review
Willow Willow -- Miranda Zeiger and Jessica Vohs -- created a buzz in the San Francisco Bay Area with their close harmony singing and strong songwriting. Zeiger, the duo's main songwriter, sounds like she has a pipeline into an alternate universe where pure pop, belief in the joy of true love, and the innocence of the '60s never went out of style. Her melodies are smooth and memorable; they create a faintly nostalgic feeling in listeners. You may find yourself asking, "Where have I heard that before?" even though the songs are all brand new. The style is pure pop with a faintly British, faintly Brazilian flavor that intensifies their gently moody and lushly romantic aura. "Follow the Spring" sounds like a bossa nova written by Bacharach/David, with a dreamy lyric, keys mimicking the sound of a celesta, and the wistful Willow harmonies. "Stuck in Time," is full of longing and heartache, with faux horn accents and more tearful vocal harmonies. "Lovely Hours" brings to mind a British folk dance with its interplay of bright acoustic guitars and delirious harpsichord; "Fall in Awe" has a jazzy, Pentangle-like feel and "The Fog" sports another strong melodic and vocal hook and more sad, swooning vocal work. The arrangements favor subtle drumming, chiming, celestial guitar work, laid-back bass and occasional harp -- not harmonica, harpsichord, mandolin, cello, and keyboard accents, but it's the amazing harmony vocal work and Zeiger's timeless melodies that keep you hitting the replay button. ~ j. poet, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Several years in the making, the debut self titled CD from San Francisco bay area female harmonic pop/ sunshine folk duo Willow Willow was finally released in may '07
Singer/songwriters Miranda Zeiger and Jessica Vohs began vocalizing together not long after becoming best friends in kindergarden. After 20+ years, this long and intense bond gives them a musical blend not unlike the magic that only siblings can create (a la the Everly Bros, the Watersons, Shirley & Dolly Collins, the Moore Bros, et al) & recalls the halcyon days of the Mamas & Papas, Wendy & Bonnie, Shelagh McDonald and Bridget St John.
Miranda & Jessica have spent the better part of the past 5 years performing live, with only their voices and Miranda's acoustic guitar to support them.
↓ more ↓Now, they emerge from the studio where their album, though still fairly sparse finds their lovely weaving, intertwined vocal harmonies and plaintive acoustic guitars joined by a subtle Pentangle-ish rhythm section provided by Josh Miller (The Meek) & Paul Burkhart (Mover) with guests Alissa Anderson of Vetiver on cello, Helene Renaut (Beam) on violin, SF pop icon Bart Davenport (Honeycut, Kinetics, Loved Ones) on guitar, long time Mark Eitzel sideman Marc Capelle on keyboards & flugelhorn & MC Taylor (Court and Spark) on mandolin, resulting in a sound that could easily be mistaken for a 1971 Joe Boyd/ Witchseason production.
Produced and recorded by Monte Vallier- known for his work with American Music Club, Swell & Jet Black Crayon.
It's timeless music- with a fresh and modern sound mixed with the tradition of ballads, english folk music & 60s pop sensibilites.
