Organic Soulful Folk-Pop/Roots Rock
Bio / Background
A New England native, Whitney spent many a frozen afternoon after high-school smoking too many cigarettes and hanging out with the band dudes, sometimes singing, but often relegated to the role of "tambourine-girl ". So, at seventeen, she bought a guitar. While the boys mimicked Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton, Whitney balanced the male rock influences with the soulful likes of Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, and Janis Joplin. Further inspiration came from witnessing Leo Kottke perform, and probing Portland singer-songwriter Darrien Brahms about writing, a tenacious poet and guitarist who was ass-kicking her way through a male-dominated music scene.
Upon moving to Los Angeles, Whitney co-founded the well received band Beattrix Monqué with Kentucky guitarist David Guy (Born Cross-Eyed). After a few years, she struck out on her own and formed an alliance with producer Marc Doten (Carlos Guitarlos) to record Bring On The Rain, her first full-length album.
↓ more ↓Bring On The Rain chronicles a journey from suffering to bliss, anger to acceptance, madness to clarity. It's organic, emotional sound spans folk-pop and roots-rock, with touches of soul and world music. Whitney's vocals have been compared to Fionna Apple and Patti Griffin, while the music travels along a continuum from The Band to Led Zepplin. Intimate and forceful, Bring On The Rain tells a tale of longing, surrender, and renewal, that begs the listener to go deeper.
In 2003 Whitney penned the song Sahanna Lee, helping the independent short Waiting For Johnnie Walker, written and directed by Kerry Logan, to win Best Score at the New York Film Festival.
