Picking up where escapesilence left off, Local Journeys features Carl Weingarten's slide guitars with Michael Manring on bass and Brian Knave's percussion. The trio delivers an expansive plugged-in sound of melodic instrumentals and jazz cinemascapes.
Editorial review
Carl Weingarten has a laid-back style a little reminiscent of Bill Frisell, taking his time even when his sound is at its most rockish. With bassist Michael Manring and drummer Brian Knave in his trio, Weingarten creates music that often has the sound of rock while its slow movement and development are closer to new age. Six of the 11 selections have one of three cellists in the ensembles, and keyboardist John Baker is on three songs. However, the emphasis is on Weingarten's sound and the mood set by the pieces' themes rather than any real forward motion or excitement, so some may find the results a bit dull. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
by Glenn Astarita, JazzReview.com
"West Coast guitarist Carl Weingarten is a colorist who blends an enviable technique with gobs of emotive sentiment and subtly designed electronic effects. On this endeavor he employs a strings section on selected works, to complement electric bass hero Michael Manring's softly lyrical accompaniment.
Weingarten uses various electric slide guitars, dobro and ebow to round out these eclectic, electronic dreamscapes. He uses volume control techniques to leverage his multihued phrasings throughout these pieces that impart a sustaining impression. Elsewhere, the guitarist plucks gentle harmonics while generating endearing, melodic hooks via his supple slide guitar voicings.
Weingarten conveys an artsy musical persona, often dappled with poise and a near-flawless mode of execution during these enduring tone poems that beckon repeated listens. (Enthusiastically recommended...)"
