Deft songwriting, powerful yet intimate vocals, lush string arrangements, and brisk drum loops: folk-pop that's a bit more ragged than Sarah McLachlan, but without the anger of Ani DiFranco. Brought to you by Peppermint.
Bio / Background
"Distinguishing oneself in the folk-pop arena is no mean feat these days, but there's something in Brenda Weiler's music that woos the listener and won't let go. With her own acoustic-guitar work serving as the basis from which everything else springs, Weiler utilizes subtle drum loops and lush (though unobtrusive) strings to make her melodies soar...The focus is kept on Weiler's eloquent, everywoman voice, and her exquisite sense of silence and space within her arrangements...Weiler appears poised to win audiences on a broader scale." - Performing Songwriter Magazine
"Minneapolis songwriter Brenda Weiler's third album, 'Fly Me Back,' comprises intelligent and achingly honest portraits of drama queens and dreamers, set to a backdrop of folky guitar and decidedly nonfolky guitar loops." - Bitch Magazine
"This third release from songstress Weiler is as well-written and well-sung as anything by any of her more famous soon-to-be-contemporaries.
↓ more ↓An uncommon depth to the lyrics and arrangements give 'Fly' its roots and wings, and if growth is what you look for--make that yearn for--in music, then make no mistake: this is Brenda Weiler's great leap forward."
- St. Paul Pioneer Press
Coming from a musical family with eight children, Brenda learned early on how music could affect people. Although she played cello for ten years, Brenda didn't pick up the guitar until the summer after she graduated from high school. She immediately started writing songs, and that fall, while taking a year off before going to college, she started performing in her hometown of Fargo, North Dakota. A self-recorded demo tape caught the attention of Fargo-based independent record label Barking Dog Records, and with their help, she recorded "Trickle Down." As her musical career snowballed, she decided to put off college indefinitely, and began touring full-time. Traveling across the Midwest and up and down the West Coast, Brenda played to packed houses, building up a dedicated fanbase that now numbers in the thousands. In 1998, Barking Dog released her second album, "Crazy Happy," while Brenda continued to tour year-round.
In late 1999, Brenda decided to strike out on her own, and "Fly Me Back" represents her first fully independently released album. Drawing from musical influences as diverse as Patty Griffin and Radiohead, Brenda combines her love of acoustic music with inventive drum loops, lush strings, and her intimate yet powerful vocals, to create an album of pure honesty and grace.
