Bio / Background
Ass-kicking, high-energy free jazz by the infamous drummer/leader of The Flying Luttenbachers! 65 minutes of live and studio tracks documenting this powerful new unit.
featuring:
Weasel Walter (drums)
Damon Smith (bass)
Randy Hunt (bass)
John Gruntfest (alto saxophone)
Aram Shelton (alto saxophone)
Henry Kaiser (electric guitar)
The music of the Weasel Walter Quartet harkens back to that of free jazz legends like Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, Masayuki Takayanagi and Peter Brotzmann - there is an emphasis on overt speed and violence while never losing sight of articulation and interplay. The group is interested in power, excitement and fury - the kind created by the dripping sweat and blood of its members’ manic performances. The quartet doesn’t dabble in rock or any other idiomatic cliches - the music is 100% abstract improvisation: dense, furious and modern.
The group made its live debut in August 2005.
↓ more ↓Based around the core rhythm section of Walter, bassists Damon Smith and Randy Hunt the band has gigged regularly around the Bay Area. Avant-guitar legend Henry Kaiser first sat in with the group in December 2005 and is prominently featured in the expanded Weasel Walter Sextet (with second drummer William Winant - recordings to come on ugEXPLODE in 2007). In June 2006, original member Josh Allen was replaced by alto saxophone goliath John Gruntfest. Former Chicago scene mainstay Aram Shelton has guested with the quartet (and will join the ranks in 2007, making it a permanent five piece.)
The eight tracks that make up the “Revolt Music” CD were recorded between December 2005 and October 2006 at New, Improved Studio in Oakland, California as well as live in front of frotthing audiences in Oakland, San Francisco and Davis, California.
Bandleader Weasel Walter is best known for leading the long-running cult punk-jazz/no-wave group The Flying Luttenbachers as well as for stints in a multitude of underground rock units such as XBXRX, Bobby Conn, Erase Errata, Total Shutdown, To Live and Shave in L.A., and Lake Of Dracula. In the field of improvised music he has played and recorded with musicians like Jim O’Rourke, Kevin Drumm, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Joe Morris, Vinny Golia, Ken Vandermark, Hal Russell and Marco Eneidi. Since 1990, he has steadily gained a reputation for his kinetic, iconoclastic fusion of jazz virtuosity with hardcore punk, no-wave and extreme-metal ethos.
In recent years, Walter has been invited to New York, Chicago and Austria by festival organizers to play his intense, kinetic improvised music, both in solo and group formations. In February 2007, Walter and bassist Smith will do a series of dates in New York City with great musicians like Henry Kaiser, Marc Edwards, Lisle Ellis, Elliott Levin, Marshall Allen and Marco Eneidi. The Weasel Walter Quartet will continue to grow and expand, rallying its listeners to revolt against musical and social complacency!
