Bio / Background
J.D. Allen, songwriter and solo guitarist is the Windy City Cowboy, grew up in Edison Park, Illinois. His love of country and gospel music came from his mother, who inspired him through her beautiful voice to sing to the Lord from his heart. It was his brother who handed him a guitar at the age of 15, and within weeks he had completed his first 3 songs. By age 17, playing cover songs and original songs at various music venues in the Santa Cruz (California) Bay Area , J.D. performed with many great musicians, many of who have gone on to make their own mark in country music.
His powerful and distinct vocal abilities and rhythmic instrumental style have enabled him to create new original songs that don’t sound like someone else. J.D.’s was influenced initially by country, but his style also touches on blues, gospel, swing, and classical.
For the past 20 years, J.D.
↓ more ↓has been the spiritual touchstone as The Windy City Cowboy, contributing not only sterling musicianship on guitar, but also a catalogue of beautiful songs that deal with commercial melodies and a deep moral message. Without being preachy, the significance of each song is the Biblical principle at the core. While many songs leave you hanging, J.D.’s songs have a resolve to show there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel.
Originally called the Armenian Cowboy and the White Saddle Band, J.D. changed his name to Windy City Cowboy after fans found it unique that he was both from Chicago and played country music.
When he’s not writing or performing live, J.D. enjoys reading, biking, swimming, and teaching, and can occasionally be persuaded to go bowling. He currently is recording his third CD, which while staying true to the country roots, will have a strong gospel message.
