Turn it up. Low down, dirt, muddy, jam band, rock hard, blues rock, easy and heavy on the heart and soul.
Bio / Background
The band got started in the summer of 2000, rehearsing in a non air-conditioned, 3rd story attic of an old, ready to burn to the ground, house in Chicago near Damen and Montrose.
One year and one 5 track EP later, Voodoo Pilot decided to abandon the attic, and relocate to the "luxurious" basement studio belonging to the band's heart and soul, Mr. John Liggett, who writes the lyrics and provides the basic "blueprint" for much of the bands original music. John sings lead vocals with reckless abandon and plays guitar.
The band has played all over Chicagoland, from small bars where the stage was about the size of a claustrophobic service elevator, to some of Chicago's better venues such as Cubby Bear, Fitzgerald's, Martyrs', Beat Kitchen, Elbo Room. Voodoo Pilot has been getting around the region a little more, playing a number of times at both Otto's Niteclub in Dekalb, IL, and Mike's Roadhouse in Beloit, WI among other regional venues.
↓ more ↓The band has enjoyed radio airplay on Chicago's own WXRT, as well as numerous, musician friendly radio stations across the country.
In the fall of 2003, the band waived in the smooth, driving force of Dave Kohn on drums. Dave has great ears and provides a comfortable bed upon which the band plays their licks. Rounding out the rhythm section is Pete Senger whose straightforward attack on bass is occasionally punctuated with clever melodic lines during the bands improvisational moments. Last but not least is the colorful and fiery lead and slide guitar work of Bill Galey who originally auditioned for the band five years ago under the premise that he was a keyboard player. Bill is a self taught guitar player, who learned his chops listening to Duane Allman, Hendrix, Garcia, etc.
The bands influences are diverse, from delta blues to jazz fusion, from Bob Dylan to Frank Zappa, resulting in a bluesy melodic rock and folk rock blend with a splash of Americana and a touch of psychedelic, reminding some listeners of The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead.
"The second full-length from local all-American blues rock quartet Voodoo Pilot – soars on the playing of lead guitarist Bill Galey, wherein he follows a semi-pretentious opening lead on the title cut with some serious fretwork by the song’s close. But he’s equally subtle and nuanced on quieter forays. Vocals by supporting ax man John Liggett are serviceable to his lyrics in a deadpan Jim Morrison way (especially on opening cut “Down”), and there’s adequate bass and drum support. There’s makings for greatness..." David C. Eldredge of Illinois Entertainer (02/28/06)
Voodoo Pilot has one self titled EP (2001) and three full length CDs available on CD Baby: "Sometimes" (2003), "Turntable Lover" (2004), and "Good Luck Charm" (2007). Purchase all three for $15, details in CD Baby shopping cart!
