20 songs. 78 minutes. 8 dollars. This thoughtful album, painstakingly crafted over a period of 3 years, is a blend of thick, layered arrangements and gentle, haunting melodies. Whispery vocals, led by piano and acoustic guitar, recite reflective lyrics.
Bio / Background
"What Breaks, What Was Made, And What Is Taken" tells a story and speaks of elements everyone can identify with: life, love, and loss; exhausting, crippling pain, and the eventual recovery and accumulation of new strength. Themes of truth, aging, and doubt are also apparent and further enhanced by the dynamic of each song. The soft, natural quality of acoustic instruments is complimented by energetic beats and ambient synthesizers.
Written as a single, cohesive composition, each song was created with care and deliberately ordered to enhance the listening experience. The album begins quietly, using only a few instruments and ambient sound effects. As the album progresses, however, it gains new qualities and swells with energy. Eventually, it slows again, circling back to where it started, completing the progression, and the story.
Although best regarded as a whole, the songs can certainly stand on their own.
