Magnet Magazine called them "The Ones To Watch" in their most recent issue. The Willamette Week describes them as "dirty, glammed-up, drugged-down guitar rock with a dark heart. Their brand of ambient rock carries forth in a grand tradition.
Bio / Background
TRUST TRUTH----->>>
Come on,
In the beginning THE UPSIDEDOWN created the rightsideup in the image of THEUPSIDEDOWN. Their music exemplifies a love of the mystery and sexy elements of rock and roll. Willamette Week describes The Upsidedown as "dirty, glammed-up, drugged-down guitar rock with a dark heart. Their brand of ambient rock carries forth in a grand tradition: carefully constructed Dandies drone, pop hooks and devil-may-care-decadence."
The first time Jsun and Matt met could have been the last time. A rattlesnake crawled into Matt's blue denim cowboy boots during their yoga class. Discovering the coiled bombshell, Matt and Jsun wrangled the snake out of the dressing area using a holey holy T-shirt.
Matt Moore, a Missouri throw-back captures the low-end guitar sound through a '65 Bassman amp; a solid wall of rhythmic rock candy.
Matt introduced Jason to his friend from St. Louis, B. Mild. Matt knew B. because B. was married to Matt's ex-girlfriend. B.
↓ more ↓Mild's drums perpetuate a rolling mid-west thunder for THE UPSIDEDOWN to layer above.
Jsun Atoms, lead vocals, (ex-member of seminal Portland shoegaze space rock outfit, The Bella Low) wrote a number of the songs for THE UPSIDEDOWN album "Trust Electricity" in Morocco. Jsun found himself writing in the Tangier Inn, the same public house in which Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch and Bowles worked on The Sheltering Sky.
Lead Guitarist Rob Scrivner had been introduced to Jsun by a Statesman Journal beat writer. The Journalist had interviewed The Bella Low and thought Rob and Jsun had similar musical interests. Rob played with the legendary John Fahey in the John Fahey Trio. Rob paints with feathery atmospheric guitar strokes across the landscape of THE UPSIDEDOWN.
Brett Kron came upon a colossal toaster in the desert and a bee came out and asked him if he preferred his toast buttered or plain. Brett conducts tectonic tremors that boom underneath THE UPSIDEDOWN sound with Rhodes, Hammond, and Triton. Brett played a large hand (also known as a gargantuan appendage) in the production of "Trust Electricity".
One day Matt met a girl at the Sapphire Hotel in Portland. A few weeks later at practice Jsun picked up a magazine and pointed out the picture of a girl in an advertisement. He knew Matt frequented the restaurant advertised. "Do you know her?" Jsun asked. "Yes that's Tristan," Matt replied. "Does she play bass?" The bravura doe eyed Tristan Evans plays a 1977 Rickenbacker bass sent in the mail from her dad who acquired it in Kansas from the band Kansas.
It's all so beautiful, it's all so dreamy and it's all been "essentially a warm-up," THE UPSIDEDOWN "is on deck for a big year supporting it's new full-length album, Trust Electricity" on Reverb Records.
TRUST ELECTRICITY----->>>
The Portland Oregon music scene is alive and well. Very alive, very well! The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Helio Sequence, Decemberists, Sleater Kinney, The Dandy Warhols, The High Violets, The Thermals and Steven Malkumus. And now joining them is THE UPSIDEDOWN who just released their debut album TRUST ELECTRICITY on Reverb Records. The band had help in the studio from Dandy Warhol and Elliott Smith collaborator Tony Lash (ex-Heatmiser member) and it sounds absolutely brilliant. The band formed out of the ashes of seminal Portland shoegazer band The Bella Low and have been winning fans and influencing people ever since. They just finished up a full-on national tour and radio & press were faithful:
The Willamette Week described The Upsidedown as: "dirty, glammed-up, drugged-down guitar rock with a dark heart. Their brand of ambient rock carries forth in a grand tradition: carefully constructed Dandies drone, pop hooks and devil-may-care-decadence." The Willamette Week know how to call it. KPSU described the band as "The best band that will come out of Portland in 2004!"
With thumping, psychedelic, sexy and danceable beat driven songs like "Wake Up Drive Thru," "Blackeye Liner" and the Portland/George W. Bush riots inspired track "Pepper Spray," The Upsidedown are on a mission to bring some big bad dirty fun back into the world of independent music. They also successfully navigate territory formerly travelled by Love and Rockets and Echo & the Bunnymen, but with their own style, sound and attitude. And their cover version of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" is like no other. The band close off the album with their version, which is dripping in fuzz, swagger and sex. FACT: Every time a version of this song has been released in the UK, it's gone straight to Number 1. The Upsidedown will release this song there in 2005. Until then, America should prepare itself to embrace The Upsidedown sound, which just recently hit shelves in North America.
