Bio / Background
The sound and style of Monica Uhm can be considered something akin to urban-philosophical folk/pop. She grew up with the blaring iconoclasm of American pop culture that includes Sesame Street, Kraft Mac&Cheese, McDonald's, and the stereotypical marks of suburbia. Just as the predecessors in classic folk songwriting struggle with identity and defining the experience of evolving humanity through the stories that evoke a melancholic plain in the deepest widest expanses of middle-America, she writes through her own unique poetry of the emotional landscape of coming of age and finding identity in more ephemeral places. The songs have a quirky yet soulful touch in its portrayal of this perpetual quest and excavation of that place and identity called the soul.
She has been writing and performing in all corners of the downtown music scene in New York City, having started out in open mic nights in the darkest, dankest but dearest of bars in the city.
