Noisy guitar pop from Derby, UK with memorable melodies and male/female vocal interplay.
Editorial review
From England's Midlands, Twinkie is a band that harkens back to the glory years of underground music, when outfits like Dinosaur Jr., the Pixies, Volcano Suns and Sonic Youth (not to mention labels like Blast First and Rough Trade) were all the rage. So if putting on the Derby-based group's eponymous debut makes you want to party like it's 1989, it's understandable as evidenced by the jagged indie drone of "Crime" and the downright infectious synth-bleep and guitar-blur of the late-album keeper "Guess the Weight of My Wife the Horse." Both of these songs boast the unisex harmony vocals of bassist/lead vocalist Moo and guitarist/backing vocalist Debbie. If the feedback frenzy of "Mr. Pierre" sabotages most of its melodic allure, the disc's closer puts Debbie on the primary mic for its finest moment. Having the same sort of impact the Kim Deal-sung "Gigantic" did on Surfer Rosa, it's the final sonic chomp of one sweet Twinkie. ~ John D. Luerssen, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Twinkie is a co-ed four-piece band from Derby, UK with a well-established live reputation, along with numerous glowing reviews of self-released and small label singles and EPs in the past. On their first full-length CD, Twinkie lets loose with its full array of alternately crunching and ringing guitars, vocals that vary from swooping to quirky, along with pounding drums and bass-all the while refusing to abandon a pop underpining. The dual vocal team of male bassist Moo and female guitarist Debbie (last names unknown!) give the band a distinctive dimension. Often compared to The Pixies, Twinkie remains a unique band that has finally put it all together in the studio. A bonus unlisted 15th track adds to the value of the package.
Reviews
Pop-A-Go-Go: "Rampaging white-noise pop pixies...ramshackling all the way, just how we like it.

E-P Magazine: "Twinkie confirming their magpie approach to style by chucking a dreamy guitar blur over a Buzzcocks chord change and rattling along at high pop revs for three minutes on TK-1 whilst Mondomingo is a bass-heavy churn that resembles fellow-Derbyites, and Twinkie-supporters, Cable with backing vox. Two corkers."
Tasty Fanzine: "They may have the most tweesome name in tweedom, but mark Twinkie down as anorak wearers at your peril. Live, Twinkie are peerless. While they come on like a heavy metal Lungleg, then I, for one, will continue to buy their records. Possibly the East Midlands' best kept secret."
Atomic Duster: "Fresh from supporting Fugazi no less in front of 3000 fans, the way Twinkie connected to the audience at the Lamplighters is a credit to their charismatic stagecraft. Great visually, combining indie chic with a stylish 1940s moustache provided by the singer/ bassist, with a bit of David Byrne eccentricity thrown in for good measure. However Twinkie are not merely good lookers - their sonic range goes from earth shattering chord progressions and guitar riffs, to the subtleties you'd associate with Portishead at their most endearing. Vocals combine masculine resonance with feminine softness - the perfect mix. See this band!"
