Tullamore Celtic Band CD - Notes & Comments on Tracks
1. Blackthorn Stick,Haste to the Wedding,Saddle the Pony: Double Jigs - Terry starts on guitar in drop D tuning, Brian then enters on Irish black wood baroque flute and finally Dick enters on fiddle. These are our arrangements of tunes that have been popular for many years at the Rochester Irish Musicians Association jam sessions, a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann,CCE. The band members met at these jam sessions
2. The Spanish Lady: Song which Dick starts on lead vocals & guitar in standard tuning; Brian plays black wood flute and sings and Terry plays guitar in standard tuning and sings. This is a favorite fun pub song with a melody also used as a bouncy reel or polka.
3. March of the King of Laois,Brian Boru's March: These are old clan marches which Dick starts on celtic harp;
Terry then enters on guitar in drop D tuning and then Brian enters on low D whistle on King of Laois and then plays black wood Irish flute on Brian Boru. These two ancient tunes play well on the old Brian Boru style traditional Irish lever harp. The Gaelic word Laois is pronounced "Leesh."
4. Mary Mack: Song on which Terry sings lead vocal and plays guitar in standard tuning; Brian plays low D whistle and sings and Dick plays an ashiko African drum and sings harmony. This is our arrangement of a classic humorous Irish song about arranged marriages which were once common in small rural Irish villages.
5. Silver Spear,Drowsy Maggie: Two reels on which Dick starts solo on fiddle and is then joined by Terry on guitar in drop D tuning and then Brian playing black wood Irish flute. These are high energy reels that feature the traditional Irish music combination of fiddle & wood flute.
6. Poor Irish Boy,Skye Boat Song: Two slow aires on which Brian starts with black wood flute, is then joined by Terry on guitar in standard tuning and then Dick playing Irish harp. These tunes highlight the combined timbres of black wood flute and celtic harp.
7. Banish Misfortune,Admiral Butterfly: A double jig and a
slip jig. Terry plays the first tune solo on guitar in DADGAD tuning with Dick coming in on second time through with fiddle playing low pipe type drone notes which transition to the second tune on which Brian starts on lead with black wood flute and then Dick joins him playing melody on the fiddle. This is our arrangement of jigs popular as step dance tunes in the Rochester, New York area.
8. Jenny Be Fair: Song which Terry sings in the traditional celtic manner a capella solo. This is a very funny song which pokes fun at the challenges of trying to get, and stay married in a small rural Irish village!
9. The Rocky Road to Dublin: Slip Jig & Song. Terry gets the tune started with swinging guitar rhythm in standard tuning and is then joined by Brian improvising on black wood flute and Dick on fiddle. We then morph into the standard Irish song by the same name with Dick on lead vocals and ashiko African drum and Brian and Terry on supporting vocals. This is our jazz waltz arrangement of a classic slip jig and it's song which shows that rap and hip hop music: stories and poems vocally intoned to strong accompanying rhythmic beats, actually originated in Ireland.
10. The Flowers of Red Hill,The Swallow's Tail: These two driving lively reels are started by Brian playing solo on black wood flute, then joined by Terry on guitar in standard tuning and Dick on fiddle.
11. Carrickfergus: Ballad style song with Dick on vocal, guitar and celtic harp, Terry on guitar in standard tuning
and Brian on silver flute. This powerful song is set to a haunting melody to which we have given a rich yet simple instrumental arrangement.
12. The Rose in the Heather,The Connachtman's Rambles: Two double jigs on which Terry plays guitar in DADGAD tuning,
Brian plays black wood flute and Dick plays fiddle. These are locally popular session tunes with which we feature our "Tullamore Celtic Band" style of improvisational arrangements of standard celtic melodies.
13. Sally Gardens: Aire & Slow Reel with Brian on black wood flute, Terry on guitar in standard tuning and Dick on fiddle. For those listeners familiar with both the song and the reel of this name, but with two distinctly different melodies, you will hear that we have arranged them so that they are played concurrently as slow aires. Strange, but true!!
14. New Year's Day, Kesh, Road to Lisdoonvarna, Out on the Ocean: Double Jigs with Terry playing guitars in DADGAD and standard tunings, Brian playing black wood flute and Dick playing fiddle. These four jigs feature a guitar solo, fiddle & flute solos and duets and lots of improvisational spontaneity, creativity and energy.
15. I'se the B'ye: Song which Dick starts with fiddle and then sings lead vocal, Terry plays guitar in drop D tuning and sings bass, and Brian plays low D whistle and sings. This is a fun mischeivous "fishing" song and dance tune popular in Newfoundland - one of our favorites to play and sing and for us this track is a great way to wind up our first CD.
Tullamore Celtic Band can also be heard on the CD by Ann Mitchell & Kerry Lynn Slominski titled Ever The Winds which is available at cdbaby site: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/amkls. On this recording Brian, Dick & Terry play on the Irish classic song Boulavogue and the Tommy Makem song, Ever the Winds.
