A smart, catchy acoustic and electric look at Sex and Drugs, Peace and Love . . . 40 Years Later
Bio / Background
Sex and drugs and peace and love aren’t what they used to be, or are they?
That’s the question Long Island Tom Griffith explores in his new CD 40 Years Later.
Tom Griffith is award-winning singer-songwriter and recovering jingle writer currently working the twelve-tone program. All through the 80s and early 90s Tom was hooked on the fiendish habit of writing award-winning, memorable songs under 30 seconds long; tunes like “It’s As Real As It Gets” and “Welcome to Millertime” for the Miller Brewing company, “I’ve Got that M&M’s Feeling,” for Mars, and “Sometimes You Need a Little” for Finesse shampoo.
And even though he won a couple of Clios and a Cannes Silver Lion, and got to write and produce jingles for artists like Michael Bolton, Marc Cohn, Ry Cooder, Fats Domino, Dave Edmunds, Allen Toussaint, Jimmy Buffett, .
↓ more ↓38 Special, Kenny Rogers, and George Benson, ultimately Tom decided to turn his attention to something more meaningful than writing about soup and beer.
Still, old habits die hard. Making music was in his blood. He’s not proud of it, but Tom did fall off the wagon. Luckily, he didn’t get run over or dragged by reins that twisted around his ankle or anything like that. However, his CD, 40 Years Later, is the result of that indiscretion. Although the record has been described as, “A semi-autobiographical collection of decadent and sweet-smelling tuneage to be worshipped over and over again,” and, “the white-knuckle thrill ride of the season,” Tom remains modest.
“I just wanted to write about issues that were important to us baby boomers back in the sixties, but looked at from today’s perspective. With 40Years Later I wanted to show that all of us boomers, whether we’re an ex-hippie who learns ‘No Love Is Free,’ a workaholic who discovers ‘Money’s Not the Answer,’ or the parents who find their love for their children is stronger than the ‘Rising Sun,’ are sure of one thing: It didn’t turn out like we thought.”
Yes, the road to musical sobriety is a twisted one indeed. We’ll leave you with these words to live by: “Grant me the serenity to know a good song when I hear one, the courage to turn off bad song, and the wisdom to know that 40Years Later is really, really good!”
“I liked it very much - it's in my iPod now. Terrific production quality. Tom's voice is very engaging and listenable. It was obviously a labor of love. I related to the songs and was moved throughout the disc.”
- Roy Rede, award-winning songwriter and record producer
(Dolly Parton, Nanci Griffith, Taylor Dane)
“A semi-autobiographical collection of decadent and sweet-smelling tuneage to be worshipped over and over again, 40 Years Later is the white-knuckle thrill ride of the season.”
- Mike Morrison, President - Digital Media Workshop
“Wow! Great job! Thank you for sharing such an honest, wise, funny and poignantly thoughtful journey.”
- John Brennan, lead guitarist for Poco
Forty Years Later limns the life and times of growing up and older through a collection of wonderful songs by gifted songwriter and singer Tom Griffith. It's smart and sweet and Tom's voice has a wonderful listenable quality. I love this album of songs more than I can explain.
- Seven Gaines, biographer of The Beatles, Beach Boys and Alice Cooper
