THB is a Winnipeg pop/rock band (see The Guess Who, Crash Test Dummies, Neil Young, etc.) that compares to REM, Coldplay, Counting Crows, Blue Rodeo, Barenaked Ladies and Matchbox 20.
Bio / Background
Winnipeg singer/songwriter Todd Hunter and bandmates Jeff Derksen (guitar, vocals), Larry Kowalski (bass guitar) and Brett Papineau (drums) perform honest pop-rock songs that draw comparisons to artists ranging from REM, Counting Crows and Blue Rodeo to Live, Matchbox 20 and Coldplay. The summer of 2004 marked the release of THB's debut album "Remember" which earned positive reviews and TOP 20 chart positions at several college campus radio stations in addition to regional commercial radioplay.
The members of Todd Hunter Band were all raised in Winnipeg, breeding ground to the likes of The Guess Who, Neil Young, Crash Test Dummies and Chantal Kreviazuk. Todd grew up with headphones on, wearing out vinyl albums from KISS and the Beatles until he eventually started writing songs and singing in bands - all of which Jeff became the principal guitarist for (Note: Todd also enjoyed a brief stint as a hip hop DJ in a group that released Winnipeg's first ever rap recording!).
↓ more ↓Todd and Jeff formed Todd Hunter and The Tourists in the late-90's and released one full-length album "Cold Winter Days" which also featured performances by both Todd's father, Barry Hunter, and the legendary Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve (Streetheart, Tom Cochrane) on bass guitars, in addition to guitarist Murray Pulver (Crash Test Dummies, Doc Walker) and drummer Steve Broadhurst. The album was only released locally but one song, "Jumping Off The Bridge", managed to beat out superstar Tom Petty to claim the #1 position on MP3.COM's Rock Chart as the most downloaded song.
As Todd's songwriting evolved, so did the band's sound until Todd Hunter and the Tourists evolved into Todd Hunter Band with the 2004 recording of "Remember". The album featured Todd Hunter (vocals, guitars) and Jeff Derksen (guitars, vocals) accompanied by Corey Smith (bass guitars, vocals) and once again, Steve Broadhurst (drums). Before the album's release, Todd and Jeff sought out and recruited Larry and Brett to complete the band's lineup and the rest is history in the making...
PRESS CLIPS
"...engaging and thoughtful...skillfully balancing jangly guitars, bittersweet melodies, low-impact beats, contemplatively confessional lyrics and a warmly smoky voice uncannily and unaffectedly similar to R.E.M's Michael Stipe, Hunter leads his band through a dozen impeccably crafted pop-rockers whose artistic maturity is matched only by their emotional sincerity. If you remember the days when pop music possessed both brains and heart, Hunter will seem like an old friend. - Darryl Sterdan, Winnipeg Sun/Sun Media
"Remember is overflowing with honest and pure rock and roll that owes nothing to the over-produced, over-fed product being passed off as music of right now, and deserves to be heard on both sides of the border. An extremely promising debut that bodes well for the future...- Gina, Evolution Of Media (eomentertainment.com)
"Ill be salivating at the record store for the next assortment of modern pop rock songs from Hunter. In the meantime, this album has found a home in my CD tray" - Jeanne Fronda, The Manitoban
"Somewhere in the vicinity of Skydiggers, just left of Blue Rodeo and right of R.E.M...we 30-somethings need more music like this that we can relate to! - Broose Tulloch, Stylus Magazine
"...remembers the likes of late-80's Smithereens and Hoodoo Gurus, or even mid-90's Fastball and Semisonic...a well-focused romp through a dozen unpretentious pop/rock tunes." - John Kendle, Uptown Magazine
Todd's singing voice has often been compared to REM's Michael Stipe, while Todd Hunter Band draws regular comparisons to popular Adult Alternative artists Coldplay, Live, Blue Rodeo, Matchbox 20 and Counting Crows.
