"...her stylistic universe floats above the vast galaxy of adult contemporary folk, borrowing accents from Joni Mitchell's pre-Mingus period...an elegant acoustic-electric project centered around the clear, silvery vocals of the artist.."
In 1995 JACKIE TICE saw herself in a battered raven soaring over South Mountain. ''I was going through a divorce at the time and I felt like that bird,'' says the Center Valley guitarist, singer, songwriter and single mother of two musical teens. ''I was tattered and torn, but I was still flying.'' Tice turned her epiphany into the song "BLACKBIRD.
↓ more ↓" Poignant and uplifting, it helped her win the emerging-songwriters award at the 1996 Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival.
It's the most downloaded of her compositions on the Internet. Indeed, its popularity convinced her to bring it out of hibernation.
Jackie Tice won the prestigious New Folk Award from the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1996, which prompted Grammy Winner, LUCINDA WILLIAMS, one of the judges, to say, "I love your songs!." Jackie's award-winning song, The Marijo Tonight, is featured on Christine Lavin's independent compilation, The Stealth Project:music under the radar.
This award-winning singer-songwriter released Blue Coyote in 1998 to critical raves and kudos from major music media in the US, Australia, Italy and Canada and received
three "best of" mentions from folk radio at WFMT (Chicago), WCUW (Boston) and WDIY (Allentown).
She has been called "an eloquent storyteller whose songs elevate common experience with subtle layers of meaning" (Richard Fox, WCUW) and an artist with "a poet's touch," writing about "complex, believable characters who grow more vivid with each listen." (R.A.B. Perch, Canada, Folk
and Acoustic Music Exchange)
"Lyrically brave" is how ACOUSTIC GUITAR MAGAZINE describes the music of Jackie Tice, adding, "Tice's songs capture instances of universal recognition and appeal. Her ode to a Dublin pub, 'The Marijo Tonight' is a guitar player's 'Piano Man' and as bittersweet as John Prine's 'Angel From Montgomery'."
The co-mingling of Tice's Native American and old European roots informs her musical and lyrical styling, scouring subjects as diverse as the lives of Magdalene women, Shakespearian love and the call of coyotes.
Jackie Tice has shared the stage and opened for audiences with many artists, including Bill Miller, John Gorka, Christine Lavin, Peter Yarrow and Paul Noel Stookey, Jim Lauderdale, Vance Gilbert, Moxy Fruvous and The Nields.
