Contemplative lyrics, soaring vocals, fierce instrumentation, dramatic tempo shifts, complex structures, and scrutinizing attention to song craft.
Bio / Background
Combine the finest elements of progressive rock, heavy metal, punk, and classic rock. Inject it with a heavy songwriting emphasis and a style that often strays from convention. The outcome only begins to describe the gripping musical experience that is The Under.
On their self-titled EP, this Boston-based trio hammers out an epic sound by taking lessons taught by classic acts such as Rush and Black Sabbath and fastening them to a horde of other musical inspirations across various spectrums. Offering contemplative lyrics, soaring vocals and fierce instrumentation, their first EP release is a fine sampling of what The Under looks to bring to its audience.
At the turn of the century, a sluggish Miami music scene bid farewell to vocalist/guitarist Daniel Costa, and after performing in a handful of short-lived projects in Boston, Dan met bassist Jason Walker. Also from Florida, Jason had played with guitarist and vocalist Meaghan McLaughlin in Libertine.
↓ more ↓A search for a drummer came to a halt when the guys jammed with Randy Odierno from Boston metal legends Disrupt and Grief. Randy initially made no mention of his former bands but pronounced a deep enthusiasm for prog rock and doom metal. One long phone call and one jam later, The Under was born.
Since 2006, the band has played several Boston-area shows at venues such as the Bullfinch Yacht Club, Abbey Lounge, TT the Bear’s, Great Scott and the Middle East Upstairs and Downstairs. The four-song EP now allows them to crystallize a sound that is rife with meaning, atmosphere and innovation.
For those who seek this kind of substance in their rock music, the search ends with The Under.
