A Melodic odyssey through time and space. Joined up music crafted with Richard Tandy's tasty playing, Dave Morgan's tasty songs and a lot of Lolly. We thought the joy was at journey's end but really it is in the journey never ending.
Bio / Background
Earth Rise (is that one word or two?) began life as a bunch of my demos recorded on a 4-track Teac tape recorder. RICHARD TANDY (ELO) heard these and was interested in recording them properly, but it wasn't until after the TIME tour of 1981 that an opportunity came up to do that. Finally the album was recorded in state-of-the-art studios with contributions from many notable musicians.
I kinda like what Ben Earl, Magnum's biographer, had to say about it:
"An album with a themed Science Fiction bent, if you intend to buy this expecting something that sounds like Magnum (Heavy Metal), then save your money, as some of the songs would not sound out of place Queen's 'Flash Gordon' soundtrack whilst others bring to mind The Buggles.
That said, there are a number of infuriatingly catchy tunes on the album, especially 'Zero Zero' and 'Pictures in my Pillow'.
↓ more ↓The slower, more reflective tunes work well too, 'Princeton' being especially emotive whilst the whole album fits together as a body of work far better than many more successful albums of the period.
Once again there is an all star cast of guests that appear on the album, but much of the work was recorded by Dave Morgan himself at home, and this helps the listener as it is clear the composer is engaging with his tunes, whilst nonetheless being able to produce tunes of both energy and whimsy with equal aplomb."
