Bio / Background
A member of the newly formed Earthwork Music Collective (www.earthworkmusic.com), singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jen Sygit reminds us that old souls do live in young minds. Whether delving into mournful blues tunes, haunting folk ballads or rousing oldtime numbers, Jen's rapidly growing repertoire of original songs has surpassed many with its sophisticated lyrics and intense emotion. This Interlochen Alumus, while composing songs primarily on guitar, also plays clawhammer banjo as well as ukulele. Jen has performed at a variety of watering holes and festivals across the state of Michigan and in the spring of 2005 played a string of shows on the east coast of the U.S., marking her transition from local to regional artist.
↓ more ↓Backed by some of the hottest talent Michigan has to offer- including members of Steppin In It, Hot-Toe-Mitty and guitar phenom Ron McKeever, Jen's debut CD 'Here to There' (Road Kill Records, 2003) demonstrates her comfort and versatility in performing a wide range of musical styles.
Now, with two years of touring under her belt, Jen is currently working on her second album to be released in early 2006 on Earthwork Music.
What people are saying about 'Here to There':
"Every song on this 10-track collection is good...keep an eye out in the future for this young performer from Lansing."
-Diane Miller WNMC/FM 90.7
"Bluesy, jazzy, folky at its best, this is rich reflective, upbeat music. Jen's songs are as comfortable and compelling as her voice is sultry and warm. 'Here to There' is a very impressive first effort."
-Wanda Degen, performance coordinator, East Lansing Art Festival
"It's as a singer that Sygit can't be ignored, and it's her voice that lights up this album and makes it fly."
-Chris Reitz, Elderly Instruments (from his review for the Lansing State Journal)
"Jen stands out in a rich company of musicians, carrying on old traditions in new ways. I can't help but to listen again and again. I just love it!"
-Rachael Davis, winner of the Boston Music Award for Best New Singer-Songwriter, 2001
