From Brooklyn, NY comes a the fantastic multi-talented duo of Jeremy Grites and Jason Brown. This is actually the 7th releases from this prolific songwriting pair, who's first 5 albums are contained on a Box Set available from their website - swivelchairmusicdotcom
Recorded on 16-tracks, it features wonderful guitar pop with strings, horns, and keys mixed in. The material ranges form jangly, retro-pop to old country, and from quirky, angular rock to quiet, acoustic laments..
WOULD SOUND GOOD ON A MIX TAPE WITH: Papas Fritas, The Sneetches, Apples In Stereo, The Black Watch, The Pernice Brothers,R.E.M.
The band Swivel Chairs began in Room 344 of the Magnolia Residence Hall at Rowan University in Southern New Jersey when two music-obsessed, dormitory suite-mates decided to start playing acoustic guitar together and trying to write their own songs.
↓ more ↓Soon enough, they had plenty of them, and they started to play live shows in coffeehouses, at college events, parties and other outside venues.
Within a year of playing together, the duo recorded and released two 30-minute cassettes of original songs, Finger Play & Action Rhymes and Mrs. Beiderman's Rooftop Garden, which were simply comprised of acoustic guitar and vocals. The following year saw the release of a 60-minute cassette entitled Loose Ends which, while still acoustic-based, was flavored with various guitar and vocal overdubs, as well as sporadic percussion and harmonies.
Over the next two years Jeremy and Jay continued to write and record, as well as broaden the scope of their instrumentation considerably. While remaining a twosome, they expanded their sound by adding electric guitars, bass and drums as well as other "foreign" instruments such as mandolins, cellos and toy pianos. Not bad for a couple of kids who never took a lesson. The next two releases, A Grain Assault and Water Spilled From Source to Use, benefited from this expanded sound. Note: These first 5 releases, as well as a disc of unreleased material, were available in a limited edition, hand-made Boxed Set from Par 3 Records in July 2003. It is now out of print.
In 2000, these 2 analog stalwarts decided to upgrade their equipment and move into the digital age. The subsequent purchase of a 16-track digital deck (and a few fancy microphones) led to a flurry of recording that incorporated many of their 'musician friends' and resulted in fully orchestrated, pop recordings that featured string & horn sections, guest vocalists and an array of other sounds they had never used before. Song styles ranged from jangly, retro-pop to old country, and from quirky, angular rock to quiet, acoustic laments from their early days. The first installment of these recordings, entitled A Late Day For Regrets, was released in autumn of 2003 by the Paisley Pop label of Portland, OR.
They followed Late Day up with a series of compilation and split-release projects throughout 2004. First, a split single with pals Matty Charles & the Valentines and a slot on the A Sensitive Man's Guide to Groovy Music, featuring folks like Kimberley Rew (Softboys), Tim Lee (Windbreakers) and Philadelphia's Trolleyvox, were released in the spring. During the summer they were included on Sweden's Sound Asleep Records' compilation entitled Hit the Hay, alongside folks like John Wesley Harding, Richard Barone (bongos), Kevin Salem (Dumptruck) and many more. They also released a 25-track compilation cd from their now out-of-print boxed set called Wet Matches.
The fall of 2004 saw the release of a full-length split CD their great friends from Philly - Polyvinyl records' Audible (featuring members of Lefty's Deceiver and Matt Pond PA). That disc, entitled Sidetrack Stars, was released in late October on NJ's Face Down Records. Immediately afterwards, they signed up with longtime Brooklyn buddies, The Banes, to make one more, 4 song, exclusive split-single dubbed The Occasional. Jeremy even went so far as to pitch in on drums for the Banes! Oh, and somewhere in there they designed new T-shirts too.
