This amazing record runs the gamut from belting rock ballads with an incredible band to beautiful intimate moments with only voice accompanied by acoustic guitar or piano.
Bio / Background
Singer-songwriter Susan Marshall is one of the very rare talents who can authentically lay claim to the title "Diva." With a list of credits ranging from opera to hard rock, blues to ballads, soul to spirituals and every possible genre in between, Susan's multi-octave vocal range can rock, roll and stir your soul. She has been nominated seven years in a row for the "Best Female Vocalist" Premier Player Award by the Memphis Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and is in much demand as a studio vocalist by International Recording Artists. A popular performer locally, she appears frequently as a solo artist and as a special guest of other performers and bands.
Susan began her performance career at Germantown High School's Award winning Fine Arts Department. After graduating, she moved to New York City, where, for six years, she was a starring member of the Off Broadway Rep Company, LIGHT OPERA OF MANHATTAN.
↓ more ↓Needing a change from the hectic New York City scene, Susan moved back to Memphis, where she helped to form local rock group, The Mother Station. It didn't take long before they caught the eye of, and signed with major label, East/West (now Elektra). As The Mother Station single, PUT THE BLAME ON ME, reached #35 on the rock charts, they spent a total of 4 years crisscrossing the continent, allowing Susan to hone her stage performance and unique vocal style.
Her demand as a studio vocalist grew after husband/engineer, Jeff Powell, introduced her to legendary producer/engineer Tom Dowd (Allman Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton). Impressed by her demo reel, Dowd included her as background vocalist on projects for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sam Moore and Primal Scream. Her list of studio credits include an amazing list of pop and rock icons, including work with Lenny Kravitz, Afghan Whigs, Ann Peebles, Mavis Staples, Keith Sykes, Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart and the North Mississippi All-Stars, to name a few.
In 1998, Susan was added as a featured member of Columbia artists, Afghan Whigs, and toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe making appearances before 40,000 fans at the Reading Festival in England as well as international festivals in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Norway, and Sweden. She appeared on their Columbia debut album 1965, and also lent her soulful sound to the bands contribution on "London Calling," the Clash Tribute Album released by Epic.
Appearing on over 60 albums from artists of all genres, it's easy to see that Susan Marshall has taken the Memphis sound across the globe and brought it home again.
