Combining the energy of rock with the lyrical candor of contemporary folk, Summer Pierre's music is Americana straight from ink-stained calloused fingertips.
Bio / Background
New York singer-songwriter Summer Pierre is a painter, a poet, a cartoonist, and a skilled songwriter of remarkable passion, humor, and wit. She writes honest and captivating anthems about heartbreak and cross-country soul-searching. Combining the energy of rock with the lyrical candor of contemporary folk, Summer’s music is Americana straight from ink-stained calloused fingertips.
Summer was born into a musical family—her father is a musician and her mother rigs on rock tours (Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and others). It wasn’t until college, however, while working on a thesis about women in rock, that Summer first tried her hand at songwriting and playing guitar, teaching herself how to play by writing a song for each new chord she learned.
Before long, Summer was performing in Boston-area clubs and coffeeshops. An engaging and charismatic performer, she would make new fans every time she played, earning praise from audience and fellow musicians alike.
↓ more ↓She has opened for musicians such as Lori McKenna and Mary Lou Lord. She has been a regular performer at Club Passim’s Campfire festivals, and was chosen to play a showcase at the 2002 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. After a successful stint living and performing in her native state of California, Summer has relocated to Brooklyn, and now plays regularly throughout New England.
Her debut album Far From Here, released in September of 2004 on Boston indie That Promising Seadog Media, is a fully realized rock album, complete with rugged, energetic production that perfectly captures the scope and poetry of her songwriting. The album features several celebrated New England musicians, including producer Rob Laurens, ex-members of New Hampshire roots-rockers Say Zuzu, and comedic folk phenom Faith Soloway.
Although best known for her music, Summer is still an active visual artist. Her watercolors are featured on Eddy Dyer’s 1999 album Explosion Alone (to be reissued Summer 2006). Her own projects include an annual illustrated Great Gals calendar, celebrating women throughout history. She is one of many talented women artists featured on the website Another Girl at Play (another.girlatplay.com).
