Steve's writing ranges from modal tales of mistaken identity such as "Travellin' Through" to the tongue-in-cheek social commentary of "Rural Methlab Blues" as he scans the interstate landscape for strange American characters.
Bio / Background
Steve Kaul - Acoustic Guitar, Resophonic Guitar & Vocal
Steve sings and performs with Martin acoustic and Amistar single cone, tricone & tenor resonator guitars. He plays and sings traditional folk, rapid-fire fingerstyle country blues and his own songs with an intense energy. He has performed for over 18 years in the midwest and has played selected shows on the west coast and Europe, including perfomances and workshops at the Minnesota Resophonic Guitar Festival and the Northeast Folk Festival.
Using a variety of open tunings Steve draws inspiration from the old guitar masters such as John Hurt and Reverend Gary Davis and modern fingerstyle gurus like John Fahey and Leo Kottke. His songwriting is stongly influenced by Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Warren Zevon.
Steve began playing the guitar at age 9. He played his first professional solo show in a coffee house in 1985 and continued to hone his skills while completing a degree in English.
